Comrades,

It has been one year since Ravens Nest was created. For one year, on and off, I have been writing any political thoughts that have come to my head. Over one year, the blog has become more sophisticated: I have added pictures, links, I occasionally put cartoons on it, and we even have a movie file, made by another Comrade.

On this day, I would like to thank all of my readers, all those who have visited, and all those who have left me messages, especially. It is your support, the aknowledgement that someone is reading my blog, that these dissident Marxist-Leninist opinions are getting out, that has probably kept me going this long. At first, when no one was visiting, I was beggining to lose hope, and was considering gettin grid of this blog. I thank every person who has read these thoughts, and I hope that you keep coming back to hear more.

Stockwell and Me

In the week after Christmas Vacation, I was flying home from visiting family in Alberta.
I was standing at the airport in Calgary, ready to get on my plane. I was in line to go through the metal detector, and I recognized the person standing in front of me.

I wasn't sure, but I was very certain that I knew who the man was. After thinking about it for a while, I decided to go up to him and ask him.

"Excuse me sir, are you Stockwell day?

It was him. The former leader of the Canadian Alliance Party, now the public safety finance minister under the new regime.

I have to say, the experience was surreal to say the least. I imagine that meeting Day was like meeting Adolph Hitler: I knew that the man was a reactionary of the worst kind, a very destructive force to the peoples of Canada, and yet I was still in the presence of a man who was once quite powerful and even popular among the deluded disenfranchised masses.

In a way, I was looking into the eyes of the enemy. Here before me was one of the servants of the capitalist class. Here was a fundamentalist Christian, a fierce homophobe, a man who is now committing millions to step up border security, a vocal supporter of President George.W.Bush
and the war in Iraq ( In March 2003, he co-wrote a letter to the wall street journal, criticizing Canada's unwillingness to get involved in the war in Iraq.).

What should I say to this man? Should I reveal that I was a revolutionary Marxist-Leninist?
Should I criticize him for his policies (This wasn't a good idea, anyways. Never start an argument in the line for airport security; That's a good way to get strip searched.)?

Should I do like my Comrade Julian Ichim during the 2000 federal election, and splatter him in chocolate milk? ( the airport staff made me drink all of my beverages before going through security. Perhaps a government Apparatchik getting soaked, was just the kind of terrorist attack that lead them to ban it in the first place.)

What to do?

He asked me if I went to the University of Victoria, (which he did.).I took a picture, to verify my story to relatives and friends, and then he was off.

Such an odd encounter, especially knowing as he walked away that one day I might be among those punishing him for his crimes. I had come face to face with a representative of the enemy.

2006: A year in Review

The imperialist wars of aggression raged in Iraq, Afghanistan and Haiti (and still do).

The Israeli Zionists launched a series of attacks on their neighbouring nation of Lebanon, murdering civilians ruthlessly with artillery strikes and bombing raids.

A crisis in Health occured for the Cuban leader, Fidel Castro Ruz. Still, he defied the United States and Infuriated the Miami drug lords by clinging to life to the present day.

The Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea was the subject of a brutal smear campaign and economic sanctions by the imperialist powers , as they dared to test missiles and nulear weaponry, in the hopes of defending their besieged nation.

Iran, also, was under pressure for pursuing a nuclear power program.

On Mayday, upwards of 3 Million immigrants demonstrated in the United States and shut down many parts of the country, in defense of their rights against the scape-goat tactics of the American government.

In the Bolivarian republic of Venezuela, President Hugo Chavez Frias was re-elected by an overwhelming majority.

In Nepal, the Communist party of Nepal (Maoist) capitulated to the forces of the Nepalese government and the United Nations, as they laid down the arms in exchange for a spot as a political party in the Nepalese parliament.

In Caledonia, the Six Nations confederacy reclaimed traditional land from the Canadian settlers,
and have held it to the present day, despite many attempts to be driven out by forces of the Canadian state.

Overall, 2006 was a year where reaction seemed to be making a desperate struggle to maintain supremacy, lashing out in all directions at any nation/ group that they percieved as a threat. In everything that they do, from invasions to occupations, sanctions to propaganda campaigns, the
bourgeosie is AFRAID. While they publicly scoff at any notions that thier wars are doomed to failure, and that the people are growing discontent with the current system, every action that the Imperialists take speaks volumes about the depth of their crisis.

I am very hopeful for this new year of 2007. In this year, I suspect that the tide of public opinion will be even harder to hold back, and the imperialists will no longer be able to smile in public; the strain of the multitude of problems, military, economic, social, environmental, etc, will really begin to hit home in this year.

I suspect that this new year will be very interesting.

The thing is, in order to do that, I need a google account. We'll have to see what happens with

Revolution: The ONLY Solution

So, Hugo Chavez won the elections in Venezuela yesterday.

This, for now, could be a good thing for the world and for humanity. On the other hand, I've been thinking a lot about Chavez's victories.

How long is it going to last?

Eventually the ruling classes will dispense with any facade of democracy, when they realize that they can not win. When this happens, another coup will most likely occur.

The oligarchy will never accept the Bolivarian revolution.

On a related note, in Ecuador, socialist-leaning President Corea won, and in Bolivia, Evo Morales is initiating land reform for the good of the aboriginals and peasants.

And in both of these cases also, the national bourgeoisie of these countries has fought the progressive forces every step of the way.

Once again, how much longer is it going to last?

Hugo Chavez has made many great changes in Venezuela under the Bolivarian Revolution, but all of them can be overturned. All of the Changes made under Chavez can be reversed.
The same goes for Morales. All it would take is one successful coup to completely negate all progress in the socialist-leaning nations of Latin America.

I have great respect for Chavez. I have great respect for Morales. My issue is, if their progress is going to survive, they are going to need a revolution, not reform. How much longer can these Presidents walk the path of capitalist parliamentary democracy? With every victory they push the disenfranchised capitalist class towards more extreme measures. For now they are beating the cappies at the election game, but how much longer is this going to last? The Oligarchs have already shown distaste for the democratic process in Venezuela, and they are also boycotting the democratic process in Bolivia.

Revolution, at this point, is the only solution. For one class to truly seize power from another, the other class must be truly defeated. The means to wage war or hinder the progress of the revolution must be forcefully removed from the bourgeoisie class for a revolution to truly take root. At this time, the oligrachs still possess the means to initiate a coup, or a civil war, so all of the acomplishments of the progressive states of Latin America are constantly in jeopardy.

Also, all private property in the form of land ownership needs to be completely abolished.
This may sound dogmatic to some, but it makes little difference in Venezuela when the common person still is not guaranteed a means of living, or a place to live. It is one thing to build low cost housing; it's another thing to continue to allow some to be charged for the right to live in their hovels.

Reform is a temporary thing. In the long run it is perhaps preferable to the system that used to exist in Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador and others. Still, the fact remains that Capitalism is a cancerous growth. It is one thing to treat cancer, but I think most people would rather cure it completely.

In the search for progressive media, one is always disappointed with what is available.

Liberal/Social Democratic blogs and web pages are in abundance, but those of us on the side of anti-imperialism and social change have no interest in "whether or not the Democrats will beat the Republicans?", or "How soon can we bring the troops home from Iraq?", or other such reformist nonsense.

I don't care which bourgeoisie party is at the helm of Canada, or any other imperialist state; They all represent the interests of factions of the ruling class, rather than the people.

I don't care about the welfare of troops overseas occupying Iraq, Afghanistan, Haiti, or any other nation; They are imperialist oppressors, and deserve to be dealt with swiftly by the peoples that they oppress. If you are an occupier, than you are no countryman of mine.

I don't pre-occupy myself with enviro-fundamentalism, "Animal rights", vegetarianism, or any other such nonsense that is passed off under the banner of the left-wing. I'm sure that some of these causes may have some valid points, but in the scheme of the global situation, they are mere diversions to keep people from taking up politics and crying out against true injustices against humanity.

I have met many others like myself. Those that think like me, see the world like me, and have taken the time to form media outlets of their own. So, for the first time, I am releasing a list of other online media outlets that I have found useful, informative and uncompromisingly progressive.

I hope that these sites will also help others to find what it is that they are looking for.

Okay, this is a link to a movie put out by a Comrade of mine in Edmonton, on the Canadian holiday of "Remembrance Day", which is today.

In this short clip, she is making the case for the co-existence of the "White poppies" Campaign side by side with the orthodox "Red Poppies" put out by the Royal Canadian Legion on Remembrance day.

What struck me as most interesting about this entire short production was a response made by one of the people who viewed it:

Alright, lets analyze this Braying-Jack Ass reply in depth.

" Their poppy represents sacrifice so that you can make silly decisions..." - The true trademark of a reactionary capitalist; They believe in the right to freedom of speech and action , but if you ever try to exercise this right, they will raise hell.

"Being active against all wars means that our armed forces will not get the financing they need to do peacekeeping abroad."
- Obviously this individual does not understand how the politics of conflict work. For starters, this individual does not realize that if the ruling class wants to go to war, they will do so and allocate funds to the military, regardless of popular protest. In the face of overwhelming mass discontent, the ruling class may keep the military itself out of a conflict, but still find back-door ways to participate in it; to give you an example, much of the ammunition used by the US in Iraq comes from Canada. Also, by stationing Canadian troops in Afghanistan, it frees American troops to participate in Iraq. Even though our government is not officially participating in the war in Iraq, they are finding ways to aid the US military. Also, this individual believes in the concept of "peacekeeping", an obvious indicator of political naivete.

- This observation not only reveals the obvious ideological slant of the individual that posted it, but infuriates me in a way that only a reactionary ideologue can. "Spread good Canadian values abroad"?! This warmonger is openly advocating Imperialism in the name of Canadian cultural chauvinism! Once again the "White man's burden" becomes the justification for wars of aggression. This individual is not only ignorant, but an aggressive Canadian chauvinist.

"they will lose their status as good guys abroad." - Who, other than our Canadian media, says that they have this status? Your argument is nonsensical; By not interfering in the sovereignty of nations over seas, I think that Canada would be held in much higher esteem, than as an imperial occupier.

I think that this person owes Paula an apology. Furthermore, I think that this person should repeat the fifth grade.

I been doing a lot of anti-war work in the last week myself, demonstrating in front of a local recruitment center to draw attention to the war in Afghanistan. The overwhelming majority of those that I encounter agree with my position, but on two occasions, individuals have confronted me angrily for daring to exercise my democratic right to free speech.

I've been thinking a lot about this. I wrote about this in March as well, in my post entitled "Ignorance is bliss". Here, once again, is another ignorant reply from the Edmonton Sun :

On this day, Remembrance day 2006, is it is important to honour the dead, but also educate people about the reality of wars of occupation in Afghanistan, Haiti, Iraq, etc. My Great grandfather served in the Second World War. I do not intend to dishonour his memory, or the memories of any others who fought against Fascism in Europe; However, I will not support any war of occupation and imperialism, and neither should any other person, whether they are Canadian or otherwise.

I salute Paula for making this short film in response to the Legions attack on the peace activist white poppies, I salute the women in black for initiating the white poppy campaign, and I salute all those who are fighting to oppose wars of occupation, especially by the current Canadian armed forces.

I think that the best way to honour the fallen soldiers of Canada, is to stop others from joining them in death.

Eco-warnings from a long-haired Commie

Recently I was discussing with a friend of mine about a report put out by the World
Wild Life Federation. The report states that the human race is now consuming resources faster than the planet can replace them. They predict that at our present rate of consumption, the world will be out of resources in 2050.

I cited this as proof that the system of capitalism is in extreme crisis; We can not continue to consume at our present rate. My friend replied "I like your argument but what if the resources run out. Even if we have socialism , it will just prolong the suffering. Eventually the human race will overpopulate and then shit will go down the sinker, unless we've settled on other planets. No, humans are kinda like a parisite, and the earth has probably had enough. Or were just gonna destroy her."

I promised him that I would do a post on this topic on my blog, so that I don't send him a reply in installations in huge e-mail messages.

The first part of the problem, as I have already touched upon with him, is our current level of consumption. I've analyzed the way we consume products. I ask myself, how much of this is necessary? In addition to Marx's analysis of the crisis of overproduction inherent in capitalism,
there is also the question of how wisely we are using our resources. I used to work in a grocery store in the city of Edmonton, Alberta. Every day we would fill the dumpster in the back room with unsold loaves of bread. The thing is, these loaves of bread were not rotten; hell they weren't even stale. All of these loaves were only a day old, still indistinguishable from what they had been only a few hours ago, and yet they are sent to the city dump to rot every day.
Now consider if every grocery store in the city of Edmonton does this. Now Consider if every grocery store in the province of Alberta does this. Now, Consider if every grocery store in Canada does this. What if every grocery store in the US did this too? How about North America? Do you see where I'm going with this?

Do we really need to cultivate as much land, and burn as much fuel in harvesting machines as we do now? Do we really need as much wheat as we do now? Do other countries need to starve and ship all of their wheat to us? Maybe if we didn't throw away unsold bread EVERY DAY, we wouldn't have to grow so much wheat in the first place! We would save a lot of land, and a lot of
fuel.

A few years ago, I visited Los Angeles. The streets were congested with traffic. Myself and five of my family were all packed into a small car, so we got to use the "car pool lane"of the road, which was empty. If the car pool lane was empty the entire time that we were there, but the regular high way was hopelessly jammed with traffic, I think it's fair to say that not enough people were using their vehicles and fuel consumption wisely. How many barrels of oil could be saved every day if people took public transportation, or simply car pooled? Once again, we get back to the question of "How much do we need?"

As my friend pointed out, "Socialism will only help to prolong the suffering", as he sees overpopulation as an inevitability. Personally, this is a problem of our current society, not the new,socialist society. Consider if the economy was centrally planned; How difficult would it be for the national birth rate to also be controlled, or at least monitored. A big part of overpopulation is that it is a symptom of our society of individual centric hedonism, as personal pleasure is promoted as the ideal that all individuals should aspire to. When personal responsibility takes a back seat to personal pleasure, and the society is apathetic to the amount of procreation happening, overpopulation ensues. Don't get me wrong comrades; I'm not promoting some sort of baby-killing squad, or even promoting abortions. Contraception is a big part of it, and state organized initiatives, like in the peoples republic of China, encouraging couples to have fewer children.

Not all measures to manage the environment and consumption are so extreme. Personally, I walk everywhere. If there is somewhere I'm going, I walk. If it is too far to walk, I take public transportation, or catch a ride with a friend. I do not own a vehicle. Now consider that. I am just one person, but if I drive a vehicle for the rest of my adult life, how many barrels of oil will be consumed? By not owning a vehicle, and using fuel efficiently, over the course of my lifetime I will save many irreplaceable liters of gas. Not to sound like a self righteous hippie, but recycling does count, and so does buying post-consumer recycled products. Don't waste food; eat all that you take. Little things like this, in the scheme of things, help buy the planet time, at least.

The clock is ticking, comrades. Now, more than ever, the need for Socialism is a very clear and present need. If we can not manage the environment, our population, and our own desires, than we may be doomed to extinction. Humanity is at the crossroads; only the path of socialism leads to survival.

Have your cake, and eat it too

Today was the pan-Canadian day of action against Imperialist war, more specifically Afghanistan.

I attended in the city of Victoria, and it was a pretty good turn-out. It was refreshing to see people focus on Afghanistan for once, the "forgotten war.".

My only problem with this march was that the air of this march seemed to be even more reformist than usual. I mean, I'm no stranger to marching alongside Social Democrats and Liberals, but usually there is some sort of revolutionary presence at these events.

But this time, it was very different.

I was presented with a petition to sign, and told that I could cross off parts that I didn't agree with. This proved to be quite useful, as I found that I didn't agree with most of what was being presented to me. This petition, while calling for immediate removal of Canadian troops from Afghanistan, also had a favourable position on the Canadian military in general, advocated
"Peace Keeping", and continued to label the Afghan resistance "Taliban insurgents."
Needless to say, I signed the petition, but crossed out more than a few lines in the wording of it.
I do NOT agree with "peace keeping", and I support the Afghan peoples RIGHT to fight heroically against all occupiers of their nation.

I picked up a copy of the Trotskyist magazine "Socialist Worker" (printed by the international socialists), and low and behold, it was filled with flattery directed towards Jack Layton and the New Democratic Party of Canada! I mean, I expected this sort of thing from the NDP's token trots in Fightback, but it seems that other organizations masquerading as revolutionaries are now falling under the spell of social democracy as well.

I think what did it for me though, was when I witnessed protestors chatting casually with police forces who had been sent to monitor the demonstration!

This was the biggest outrage of all! The state police forces, the tool of the Canadian bourgeoisie
and suppressor of all things revolutionary, were not at all threatened by a mob of citizens calling for the immediate removal of the Canadian military from the quagmire of Afghanistan.

Why is that? While anti-war protesters in Montreal and Quebec city are faced with tear gas and riot police, we are faced with a handful of friendly bicycle cops, lightly armed and heavily outnumbered. Why is the state not acting with hostility to opposition to the war in Afghanistan?

If you talk to any of my comrades, especially the ones who lived through the seventies, they will tell you stories of police brutality, the likes of which would appall the modern demonstrator. Most of my Comrades have been arrested and beaten, cuffed and tear gassed, etc. My point is, cops are agents of the state; They are the enforcers of the state. Because of this, whenever the state has a problem, cops deal with it swiftly. To paraphrase Chairman Mao, if the state police forces are not trying to wipe you out, then you are no longer revolutionary; you have sunk to the level of the bourgeoisie.

In the eyes of the capitalist class, I think that protests such as this are a "necessary evil".
By allowing the populace to demonstrate in a superficial way, they give the masses a superficial outlet for their anti-war sentiments, and the war effort is therefore not threatened.
I wouldn't be surprised if these protests were not organized/controlled by the state itself.
If not, at least they are controlled by the most incompetent and reformist individuals in the left wing community.

Consider the following: At this demonstration,we marched to a Canadian armed forces recruitment building. We waited outside, for a little while, made a few speech's, and left.
This is exactly the way the reformists planned it; A revolutionary would have taken this protest and created a barricade around the recruitment center, blocking anyone from getting in and out, attracting media attention and bringing the anti-war fervor to the masses in a tangible way.
Of course, this revolutionary and everyone in his protest would have had their asses stomped by the state police for this action, but it would be worth it. Also, if the people who attended the demo knew that there was a possibility that they would be disobeying the police and might get hurt or arrested, most of these social democratic waverers would never have come in the first place. To these people, everything,even a social revolution, has to be comfy and over by supper time. Pathetic.

Demonstrations like this one help to propagate the idea that the Canadian state is "Democratic";
In actuality, these demonstrations are heavily regulated by the powers that be, and are a barely tolerated necessity by the Canadian bourgeoisie. I have seen Comrades thrown down and handcuffed right in front of me, for no apparent reason, so I know that the state is certainly NOT democratic!

The only good thing I got out of this entire protest, was meeting other revolutionary individuals, and collaborating with them. I go to these events now, not just for solidarity purposes, but to separate the revolutionary from the reformists, and to join with them. At least there are some out there who want revolution, rather than superficial reform.

Remember Kent State, comrades! The State is NOT democratic!

Subliminal South Park

For many years now, from the birth of rock and roll music, to video games, to violent TV, to the present, the various talking heads of bourgeois political analysis are always trying to divert the people from the root causes of social problems by blaming various media sources. Violence in Movies and television, video games, rock and rap music, and other pop-culture media sources are blamed for every social problem in our society, from violence to drug use, suicide, etc, etc.

Of course, I would say that this is mostly rubbish. While certain media can be influential to young people, this is a cop out to avoid the system itself assuming any responsibility for the social alienation of the youth, and the breakdown of the society. This is a smoke-screen to bale out the system itself, propagating the fairy tale that "Capitalism works".

I will agree, though, that certain media is having an adverse effect on our society. The media that I speak is not a symptom of the decay of capitalism, but rather one of the agencies used to prop it up. In all forms of propaganda, the agenda of capitalism is promoted, more so now than ever before. Of course you would expect nothing less than the propagation of the official line of the capitalist class from bourgeoisie news sources ( FOX, CNN, BBC, CBC, etc...). The problem, however, is not only coming from the news sources; it is coming from the entertainment sources.

Of course, the infamous television show, "South Park", comes to mind. Granted that South Park can not seem to win, as the political right wing has been mercilessly blaming them for every sort of problem affecting the nation. Of course, now some of the right wing are a little more sympathetic to South Park. This makes more sense to me anyway, because I have never seen South Park as anything but a backwards neo-conservative mouthpiece.

The American right wing is finally starting to embrace South Park as the conservative mouth-piece that it is. This is the new way to spread their message to the youth; rather than coming right out and saying it, they serve their reactionary tripe to the masses in the form of humour and entertainment. Of course, as I have said, the political right-wing are masters of the art of propaganda; the best kind of propaganda is the kind of the subliminal nature.

Of course, South Park creators deny that they are right-wing, and indeed many South Park episodes feature moderately progressive themes , such as stem-cell research, gay marriage, and they took a some-what progressive stand on the post-9/11 hysteria, commenting on the situation in Afghanistan. Still, a few liberal stances are not enough to redeem them of the recurring agenda of the series.

Of course, the show preaches recurring denial of the existence of global warming, scoffs at any possibility of 9/11 being a conspiracy (without providing any rhetoric,), bullshit lampooning of the the Cuban government in the Elian Gonzales incident, lampooning regime change in Cuba,
taking an stance in favour of rain forest de-forestation, taking a stance similar to the conservative rags like the "Western Standard" on the Danish cartoons of the prophet Muhammad, not to mention re-curring homophobia and anti-semitism.

South Park is more dangerous than the news. The news presents the line of the bourgeoisie up-front; South Park cloaks it in entertainment. As always, who benefits? Who is benefiting from the on-going opposition to the existence of global warming on South park? Sounds pretty similar to the line of George W Bush and the oil barons. Of course, if an oil baron came on TV and said it, you would be skeptical. Who is benefiting from the opposition to 9/11 conspiracy theories (South Parks take on the conspiracy theories are that they are propagated by the government of the US to maintain the illusion of control; this is the exact same theory used by UFO enthusiasts.)?
If the government wanted to propagate the line of 9/11 conspiracy theories, they would flood the media with it, rather than constrict it.

Of course, South Park isn't the only culprit. "The Simpsons" is also guilty, with their wonderful
episode on China, where they assert that Mao "killed 100 million people" and made many references to Tibetan nationalism, which is a recurring theme on the show. In the words of Homer Simpson, "Communism works!...In theory!" Don't even get me started on "King of the Hill", with their propagation of regime change in Cuba, resistance to feminism, continuing portrayal of their only aboriginal character as an adulterer, and staunch support of Bush during the 2000 election, etc, etc(What can you expect from a FOX program?).

In films, you have "Team America: World Police" (Also by the creators of South park),
which defends aggressive American foreign policy and ruthlessly slanders the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea. As always there are the James Bond movies, invented to attack communism, one of the most recent features both the DPRK and Cuba as the villains.

As I have said before, in it's many clashes with the forces of revolution, capitalism has gained experience; it is smarter. While in the 50's the US media would accuse communists of worshipping Satan, they now have to accuse them of human rights violations. While in the 50's
the line of the reactionary class was presented in full to the masses, now they are disguised in media and popular culture.

Beware comrades. As Mao said "In the world today, all culture, all literature and art belong to definite classes and are geared to definite political lines." Beware even the most frivolous media, Comrades. I assure you, all media is monopolized by a handful of capitalist magnates, and is used to reinforce the system. This is why I write my blog. I try to present a view of the world, un-tainted by bourgeoisie political analysis and propaganda.

I' m not saying that South Park should be shunned; I'm only saying, take it with a grain of salt; It is very entertaining, but it is a mouthpiece of the bourgeoisie. In the meantime, support the truly independent press, and look for many perspectives on all issues.

So, the UN resolution on the DPRK has passed, and it is arguably one of the most fascist peices of legislation to come out of the world in the year 2006.

I looked over the resolution myself, and a few parts caught my eye: Among other things, this bill is imposing economic sanctions on the DPRK, on weapons and military items, but also on vaguely identified materials. There are sanctions on so called "luxury goods", which is once again vague and open to interpretation, and persons who support the right of the DPRK to possess nuclear technology are now banned from travelling to the DPRK.I am especially furious at that last part, because it is so convenient for the imperialists; now, people can not even go to the DPRK to see things for themselves, and form their own opinions about it.

This whole thing is pure aggression against the DPRK. The slander against this nation has been tripled within the last few weeks, and aggression steeply escalated.

As some may recall, in a recent post, I talked about the various liberal/social democratic left that were the front line in criticism of Hugo Chavez for ridiculous allegations of patriarchy.

In another post, "Ignorance is bliss", I talked about the ignorance that is being promoted among the masses by the mainstream media.

I think that these two initiatives are symptoms of a larger problem.

As a Marxist-Leninist, I believe in the power of the masses. I believe in the masses as the first line of defense against the bourgeoisie and reactionary forces. However, from my experiences in
Canada, especially with the Peace Region Leftist Coalition, I have learned that in countries under the influence of bourgeoisie ideological hegemony, it is the masses who are the first line of defense for reaction and bourgeoisie oppression.

Take, for example, an incident that happened in my high school years ago. The teachers at my school shut down the internet, used commonly by all students. We felt that this was fascist, as the school was stamping out the communication tool of the students, under the guise of students using the internet inappropriately, without pursuing any kind of alternatives. Because of this, the PRLC, of course, lead the protests against these measures. We put posters all over the school, and we tried talking to people. We, of course, were all disciplined by the school for daring to exercise all those democratic rights that capitalism boasts about having, and all of our posters were torn down.

What really made me sick though, was that most of our posters were not torn down by the teachers; they were torn down by our fellow students. When the leaders of the PRLC demo were hauled to the principals office, the students crowded the windows to mock us for daring to participate in politics.

As Lenin said, "Imperialist ideology also penetrates the working class. No Chinese wall separates it from the other classes".

Always, it is the masses who are mobilized to stamp out anything even remotely progressive/democratic. It is the overwhelming power of the masses, who are under the sway
of capitalist ideological hegemony, who force conformity of ideas among all of their peers.
To these masses, it is perfectly fine to be "democratic" during an election period; You go, you vote, you don't talk about politics for the rest of the year. I get scowls from people for being a communist, but I also get scowls from people just for talking about politics in general. Being as this country is so "democratic", why does every one sigh when anything even remotely political comes up in the conversation.

This is the genius of capitalism; the concept of a self-enforced dictatorship.
The education institutions, the media and the society in general propagate intense individual centrism, in every way possible. Citizens who are financially well off become totally self-obsessed by coveting currency, and products that the media tells them that they need;
The lower classes of bourgeois society are forced into individual centrism by way of harsh dog-eat-dog economics and the false hope offered by drugs, alcohol and intoxicants.
In this way, the masses are encouraged to not worry their pretty little heads with yucky stuff like politics. The masses are taught from a very early age to either consume themselves with their own pleasure and hedonism, or to completely consume themselves with the harsh realities of their social-economic situation; either way, they are actively discouraged from anything but the most superficial demonstrations of political participation.

This individual-centric obsession, when coupled with general ignorance of the world situation, as well as the lies and propaganda sown by the media/education institutes, produces an apathetic population of subjects, who will not only stay out of politics completely, but will attack any person who tries to participate in them. Diabolical.

The trick to capitalist politics, is to learn how to manipulate the masses. Keep them ignorant,
marginalize them from the political process, and convince them that the system that they live under is the best. Media scape-goating turns the population into informants for the state, ratting out any enemies of the capitalist class, and blind patriotism makes the masses support any initiative put forward by the ruling class.

If a capitalist regime has done it's job right, the system is basically self regulating.

Of course, this system isn't fool proof. Some citizens simply won't sit down, and shut up.
To counter these individuals, there is the mechanism of the of the state political parties:
the "left wing" and the "right wing", two hands of the same monster. Those that refuse to be sheep are swept up by the bourgeois political parties, who confuse them with diversions
and prevent them from doing any damage to the status quo. Those that form/join political parties that are not under the sway of the state, are severely marginalized and defamed at best,
penalized and executed at worst.

If nothing else, the capitalists have become smarter from their many battles with the forces of revolution.

Of course, capitalism is only buying itself time. Ideological hegemony is one thing, but capitalism can not deny material conditions. Capitalism can not deny the inherent contradictions and crisis
within the system. They can only buy themselves time.

At this time, there are signs of cracks in the wall of capitalist hegemony. New resources of information are making it easier for the progressive forces to spread information, for the masses to counter propaganda and educate themselves. As I have stated earlier when referring to the many blunders of the present American capitalist class, the masses are waking up from this system. Apathy is being disintegrated by the conditions of an occupation of attrition in the middle east, the economic crisis in most of the capitalist world and the growing fascism of the system itself. It will take nothing less than the full blown creation of a police state in the United States and elsewhere to jar the masses into finally abandoning this state of passive compliance with capitalist "democracy".

This is a waiting game. The capitalists can only push the envelope so far, and the masses will only tolerate so much. How much longer is it going to last? How much more punishment can the planet earth take to satisfy the material whims of capitalist over-production? How much more abuse are the exploited workers of the world going to take? What is it going to take for people to start asking questions, to resent the elite thinking for them, and to become genuinely furious
with the status quo?

The capitalist class is a man in a sinking row boat, trying to bail it out with a bucket; The masses are the ocean that once held the boat up, but are now sinking it. The bailing of the boat may buy the man time, but in the end he can not win. It will take more than media propaganda, state police and ideological hegemony to stop this boat from sinking.

Last night, from several of the bourgeoisie news sources I have heard that the DPRK
has tested a nuclear weapon.

I'm still trying to sort out my stance, as the news on this missile test is sporadic and conflicting.
At this point, mostly I am analyzing the news footage for contradictions, and doing my own research.

First off, I noticed right off of the bat that every news network that was showing this story keeps running the same file footage of North Korean military marches and Kim Jong Il waving to crowds, as they did when the DPRK tested missiles over the sea of Japan. From the very beginning, the news sources have been trying to paint the typical image of "Stalinist" Korea.
Every online article is sure to mention that Korea is a "reclusive communist nation", a "hermit kingdom", or some other such rubbish, to try and subtly influence public opinion. CNN was especially devious, as they managed to somehow work in propaganda about 2 million North Koreans starving to death into their news coverage of the alleged missile test.

I found CNN's coverage to be especially slanted (surprise, suprise). CNN had a panel of speakers on North Korea, from many countries, and of course NONE OF THEM WERE NORTH KOREAN. Also, CNN insinuated things like "North Korea has mini-nukes", but then would admit that the United States government can not even be sure that a nuclear test did in fact take place in the DPRK. Very contradictory.

I am not sure that I am even convinced that the DPRK did have a weapons test. While the possibility is very probable, the news is too contradictory, and the details are too scarce at this time. To try and get a balanced out look, I even checked the KCNA, the official news source of the DPRK. I noticed that the KCNA has not made any new posts in two days. Now this does not disprove that a missile test took place, but it doesn't necessarily prove it either. If the DPRK was being as boisterous about their missile test as the capitalist news sources claim they are being, why haven't they made any mention of a missile test on their official news source?

Of course, if the DPRK does have nuclear weapons, it makes little difference. The United States has enough nuclear weapons to turn our planet into a barren radioactive wasteland, and now they are criticizing other countries for building their own? This is the most glaring hypocrisy of all, as I have mentioned several times in several other articles on the DPRK.
Now, don't get me wrong; I am not some sort of nuclear weapons advocate. Nuclear weapons are a clear and present threat to the human race, and they should be destroyed accordingly.
However, most countries, especially imperialist countries, are not willing to do that, so my current opinion on nuclear weapons is if one country has them, ALL countries should have them. A nuclear hammer is a terrible tool of tyranny, and should never be allowed to exist.

I have to wonder, with this whole missile test hysteria, who is benefiting?
How are the imperialist powers benefiting from filling the peoples minds with fear of nuclear attack? What are their plans? How is the DPRK benefiting, by risking weapons production in the face of crippling economic sanctions? How is China benefiting, by turning on North Korea after years of supporting them economically and diplomatically? What does this change signify?

As I said, I'm still sorting out the facts on this missile test; there aren't many.

So Venezuela is under political pressure(again.).

The Imperialists have raised alarms about Venezuela purchasing $3 Billion dollars in arms from
Russia. They say that this is obvious proof of Venezuela's planned aggression against the US, neighbouring nations, etc.

Of course, this $3 billion dollar arms purchase is pocket change compared to what the US spends on arms and warfare in one year alone.

Anyways, Venezuela has insisted that these weapons are only for self defense, and President Chavez has many times spoken of American imperialism's intentions to invade Venezuela, which the American imperialists immediately dismiss as rubbish.

The American powers that be are prone to convenient spells of amnesia, you see. Apparently
Donald Rumsfeld, the warmonger raising most of these allegations against Venezuela, has completely forgotten about the coup that the United States sponsored/supported against Hugo Chavez. Apparently the American aggression against Venezuela and the Bolivarian revolution in the past are not relevant to whether or not America would do the same in the future.

Now, in addition to the Coup attempt, the American bourgeoisie incited their media puppets and talking heads against Chavez, and the Bolivarian republic. I seem to recall last year, shortly after returning from Venezuela, when the pseudo-fascist religious zealot, Pat Robertson, was openly calling for the assassination of Chavez.

Now, some may interpret this as an unrelated event, outside of the control of the American government, but this just isn't so. Media is heavily monopolized in Capitalist countries, especially the US and Canada. It is through lunatic mouth pieces like Robertson, that the bourgeoisie of the United States spreads notions and ideas beneficial to their agenda, in addition to testing the waters of public opinion. Is it any coincidence that Newspapers in Canada not only reported Robertson's comments, but put them on the front page? And of course, when the public reacted against this instigation, it was Pat Robertson, not the American bourgeoisie, who took the criticism.

This was not some off-the-record statement made by an insane religious zealot. This was a direct provocation against the government of Venezuela, given the blessing of the Anti-Venezuelan forces who own the media outlets. This was a deliberate attempt to try and gather public support for aggression against Venezuela.

If I heard someone on the street saying they wanted to kill me, I would probably stay inside for a little while. If I heard someone in another country talking about killing me, by way of the international media, you better believe I would buy a gun.

Is Chavez so different? Is Venezuela so different?
It is the same as the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea, Iran, and all other countries that are building up to defend themselves from the un-relenting threats of American imperialism.
The anti-imperialist countries of the 21st century have learned well from the down-falls of past anti-imperialist states that tried to defend themselves against American imperialism.
Albania comes to mind. Was Comrade Hoxha so wrong when he said that the Imperialists
wanted to conquer Albania? I think the un-democratic coup of Sali Berisha pretty much proved his "paranoia" to be correct.

Any country that ever makes the mistake of believing the United States has honourable intentions, and means them well, will find a bullet in their presidents brain faster than you can say "regime change.".

Imperialists don't play nice. Ever. There can be no cooperation with American Imperialism, or any other kind of Imperialism, because cooperation with imperialism is the road back to subjugation by imperialism. Remember the lessons of the old socialist camp.

Let every Venezuelan be vigilant and armed, for Imperialism will never sleep.

Abandon ship!

President Hugo Chavez of the Bolivarian republic of Venezuela made a quite controversial speech at the United Nations a few days ago.

By now, this is old news. I applaud president Chavez on his remarks and the courage needed to say them. However, as a longtime Chavista, I braced for the fallout from the political right-wing.

Of course all of the venomous tongues of the political right-wing and bourgeoisie media immediately lashed out at Chavez for his statements. This was a predictable reaction, and I thought nothing of it.

What did surprise me, however, was the fallout from the political LEFT-wing.

I received several e-mails from other members of the political left through various lists, and I heard various individuals criticizing Hugo Chavez, and urging all of their comrades to join them in doing so. Most of the focus of anger came from Chavez's support for Iran, and therefore his silent compliance with patriarchy, the oppression of women, etc.

I have to say, this is one of the most sickening examples I have ever seen of the incredible self-destructive powers of the Social-Democratic/ Liberal left wing. The waverers, the reformists and self-styled "feminists" pounced upon President Chavez like lions on a crippled deer, rather than applauding him for standing tall in the face of American imperialism.

Now some may say, the oppression of women in Iran is a legitimate problem, and needs to be recognized. Perhaps this is so, but in this case it is irrelevant. Don't be fooled by this so called
"Feminist" concern, comrades. It's all just a smokescreen, just a distraction to get the wishy-washy reformists to turn their backs on Chavez.

Saudi Arabia also oppresses women. I don't see these so called "Feminists" criticizing Saudi Arabia. As long as I have been involved in the political left, as long as I have been associating with the feminist movement, I have actually never heard any of us attack any government in particular. I think the reason for this is that most true feminists realize that, in one sense of the word or another, women of ALL countries are subjugated. There is not one particular country that has a monopoly on patriarchy.

In this case though, these "feminists" choose to criticize Chavez, not because he is head of a country that oppresses women, but because he supports the right to self determination of a country that is said to oppress women. It is kind of flimsy, don't you think?
Chavez only stands by Iran's right to self-determination, an inherent right of ALL nations, and these self-styled "feminists" try to draw a dotted line between President Chavez and an alleged patriarchal society in Iran. This is a very imperialist tactic. It is reminiscent of the Invasion of Iraq ,for their alleged support of Al-quaeda.

As with anything, the question is always "Who benefits.". One has to wonder, who is benefiting from the chaos and disarray sown within the political left community by these social-democratic reformists and "feminists". President Chavez also talked about concepts such as the renewal of the United Nations, and condemned Israeli fascist aggression against Lebanon in his speech. Of course, that isn't mentioned. To be honest, from what I gathered from an english transcript of his speech,I can not see that he even mentioned Iran that much. And yet, this is the point that the "Feminists" latched upon.

Who benefits, comrades?

I am not concerned though. An event like this only polarizes the Left-wing movement, between the Liberal/Social Democratic waverers and the truly progressive, truly revolutionary elements.
Let these "Feminists", these wreckers and subversives, spread their slander and sow their seeds of discontent. Let them insinuate connections to vile activities, and rally the reformists to abandon all things revolutionary; In the end, this can only strengthen the revolutionary movement by purging it of all capitalist cronies and spineless waverers.

The wreckers are drawing a line in the sand, and let it be known that me and my comrades have chosen our side. If they want to find people who agree with them, they'll have nowhere to go but the bourgeois parties, which is probably the point of it all, anyway.

What doesn't kill a revolutionary movement, makes it stronger. I salute President Chavez for his remarks, and stand firmly, never wavering, on the side of revolution.

Drink your sorrows away

A few weeks ago I moved into an apartment along with my younger brother, a former drug user.

Lately we have been catching up a lot. He talks a lot about his life back in the working class neighbourhood in Wembley. He talks about many of his experiences with drugs, alcohol and crime.

What I find disturbing is the way he glorifies the life of the lumpenproletariat, the criminal elements of all classes, who suck the life blood of our society.

His fondest memories are of getting high, squatting for a night in public buildings, stealing from businesses, meaningless sex, and fraternizing with other lumpen criminals and drug users.
I would probably sympathize with him if he came from a more underprivileged background, but my brother, like myself, spent most of his life in the middle class of Canadian society. He has never wanted for anything, never went without his basic needs. Truly, my brother aspires to be criminal.

It is in my conversations with Canadian citizens that I glean a lot of my perspectives on the effects of Capitalism. In the case of my brother, he is being affected by several factors:
The consequences of a culture of obsessive individualism, the effects of dealing with a hopeless world and the pressures of capitalist hegemony.

First and foremost, like most others, my brother is a victim of obsessive individual-centric behavior, a by product of the culture of dog-eat-dog capitalist economics forced upon him since birth. Truly, is there anything more selfish than nursing several drug addictions, stealing out of want rather than need, and becoming a criminal for personal gain? This is the logical outcome of a society that above all glorifies the whims of the few, at the price of the many.

Of course, his habitual drug use also has other motivations, that lie in the roots of the system of capitalism itself. Contrary to Capitalism accusing Communism of being a system "without hope", it is capitalism which offers no hope for the overwhelming majority. Like myself, my brother grew up in a utilitarian Northern Albertan town, with a low population, rampant poverty and next to nothing in the way of productive activities for the youth. Under a system, in a part of the world ( Which is experiencing an "economic boom", or so I'm told) where there is no hope, no future, it is quite easy to succumb to the pressures of hopelessness and be broken by it.
Many from my home town coped with this hopelessness in different ways, the most obvious, and preferred, method being drug and alcohol abuse. The only retail business that truly flourishes in my hometown are the liquor merchants, peddlers of apathy as a false solution to the crisis in our system. Of course alcohol and drugs do not fix the crisis of capitalism, but they certainly help one to forget it.

And then there is capitalist hegemony. The media outlets of the bourgeoisie have convinced the alienated youth to idolize criminals and aspire to be drug abusers. In order to serve the dual bourgeoisie need of pacifying the population and turning a profit from the drug industry, legal and otherwise, the bourgeoisie promote drug and alcohol use in their media, especially entertainment. In order to justify the gradual erosion of freedoms and encroaching claws of the capitalist police state, the capitalist class glorifies crimes of all kinds in their media outlets.
From these media sources, the masses, especially the youth, are presented with many a false solution to their problems: Either get rich through crime, or get so drunk/high that you just don't care anymore.

My brother is the youth of today. He has been stripped of culture by hegemonistic mass media, he has been alienated socially by the education institutions of the capitalist state, he has been exploited as labour by the ruthless monopoly capitalists, pushed into drug and alcohol abuse by
capitalist social norms, and processed by the state police forces as "another deviant youth", another young "monster".

To the youth of today, the image of a criminal, who is wealthy, successful and free from the oppression of the police state, is handsome in comparison to their bleak reality.

For this to change, the material and social factors affecting the people of today must be tackled.
A true solution must be offered to all people, a solution to their problems.

As I reminisce, I found my solution a long time ago. When my friends picked up a bottle of rye, I picked up " the manifesto of the communist party."

There is an escape from this world. I truly hope that it will be my brother and his generation who wake up and realize this goal, and that it is his generation that begins to build a new world, a new society, out of the ashes of the old.

How to make a monster

This is an interesting article, a party statement from the Communist party of Canada (Marxist-Leninist) on the recent violence in montreal, where a school shooting has taken place. Unlike most of the other talking heads of Bourgeosie political analysis, this statement focuses on the

We Must Together Avert Such Tragedies
- Statement of the Communist Party of Canada (Marxist-Leninist),September 14, 2006 -

The Communist Party of Canada (Marxist-Leninist) expresses its deepest condolences to the family of Anastasia DeSousa, the young woman killed in the shooting at Dawson College in Montreal. We express our sympathies to the some 10,000 students, college staff, their families and all Montrealers who have been so profoundly affected by this tragedy. We express our appreciation for the actions of the first responders, including police and paramedics, as well as the student union at Concordia University, professors and hospitals who took charge of the situation and played the role which befits them. They managed to impart some coherence and confidence within a dreadful situation. The antidote to succumbing to fear is to take up one's social responsibility, especially in exceptional circumstances. In this regard, having mechanisms and arrangements which enable people to deal with such events and with the ensuing psychological trauma make the difference between coherence and incoherence and stop a bad situation from becoming worse.
The recurrence of brutal, insane acts such as the shooting at Dawson are a great shock for any society. Immediately one wants to know: Who was the shooter? Why did he do it? But most importantly, what conclusions do we draw from such a shocking event and how do we orient ourselves to ensure that together we can go to the heart of the problem?
In this regard, we condemn the statement of Prime Minister Stephen Harper who declared the shooting a "cowardly and senseless act of violence." What does he know that we don't know? We live in a society which forces people to fend for themselves and many are driven to commit all kinds of desperate acts. Is it suitable to say such acts are "cowardly"? Even though the acts may be "senseless," does it mean we cannot make sense of them?
The very same day this Columbine-type tragedy occurred in Montreal, news agencies reported that a nurse in Alberta who sedated several of her colleagues to defraud them was found to suffer from bi-polar disorder. She was given two years probation with community service. Nothing was said to indicate she is getting appropriate treatment and will not commit similar crimes in the future. Such reports lead us to question the Prime Minister's statement. Why is he content with dismissing what took place at Dawson with a phrase? In our opinion, it is a cowardly statement which indicates that he has no intention of taking responsibility for a society in which such things take place.
In the same vein, there is already speculation in the media that this event will lead to a more heated debate about the gun registry. Various media outlets are also introducing a discourse about the need to profile certain youth to identify "violent behaviour" or to say that it is the fault of violent video games and movies. In this way, a very serious problem facing society and our younger generation is immediately reduced to so-called solutions which are unhelpful at best -- parents and teachers should "monitor behaviour," we need increased police presence to take more law and order measures and other such things.
Social, political, economic and cultural problems cannot be ruled out of existence with law and order campaigns, feel-good statements or facile explanations and measures which solve nothing and often make matters worse. The very idea that now young men with piercings and dressed in black are to be profiled precisely underscores that our society is in trouble. It is no different to being criminalized for being Muslim. People who look and dress in a particular way are fair game -- for our protection and security of course!
How is it that before people have even had a chance to sit and think, they are already told what the issue is and how it will be dealt with? Who decides how we should proceed?
Following the events of 9/11 we saw how an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty about the future was created and then used as a pretext to introduce the "war on terror" and invade Afghanistan, Iraq and Lebanon, as well as justify crimes against the Palestinian people. It was used to introduce police-state measures in Canada and the U.S., amongst other countries. We are now seeing the consequences of the kinds of arrangements that have been put in place while Americans were mourning their loss of innocence and trying to sort out how to move on. The agenda these arrangements serve is not to be questioned. Meanwhile, even though insecurity and uncertainty have become the new normal, the widespread belief that these measures have not sorted out any of the problems the world was facing before September 11 or after is ignored by the official circles. The criminalization of political views, national origin, religion and behaviour have become widespread. Now U.S. President George W. Bush, Prime Minister Harper and others are paving the way to criminalize any ideology or belief that lies contrary to theirs.
The events at Dawson show how some youth are being driven into a disconnect, leading to truly crazy and barbaric acts. We are not surprised that such things are taking place when the leaders in the U.S. and Canada act in the same fashion in the name of the highest ideals. In the case of the occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq, these leaders openly promote torture and mass killings as acts of great courage and valour. They declare that they will continue doing this because they can. When the tragic consequences of such a culture are revealed, they declare that some individual has a behaviour problem and refuse to take social responsibility.
On the same day that this act took place at Dawson, the Canadian Army released a new set of ads to recruit the youth to join the Armed Forces. They depict scenes from a battlefield in Afghanistan with the words "Fight fear, fight distress, fight chaos." General Rick Hillier, Chief of Staff of the Canadian Armed Forces, described the role of the military this way: "Our job is to kill people."
A hooligan culture is being promoted right from the top and it is presented as okay for the youth when it is done in pursuit of "scumbags," but not okay when it harms fellow citizens. This is the disconnect which is leading to tragedies.
When the killings took place at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, then U.S. President Bill Clinton said: "We do know that we must do more to reach out to our children and teach them to express their anger and to resolve their conflicts with words, not weapons."
This is the same President Clinton who former White House aide George Stephanopoulos quoted in his book All Too Human from the time Clinton ordered the bombing of civilian targets in Somalia:
"We're not inflicting pain on these fuckers," Clinton said, softly at first. "When people kill us, they should be killed in greater numbers." Then, with his face reddening, his voice rising, and his fist pounding his thigh, he leaned into Tony [Lake, then his national security adviser], as if it was his fault. "I believe in killing people who try to hurt you. And I can't believe we're being pushed around by these two-bit pricks."
When the future presented to the youth is one of chaos, violence and anarchy, who is going to take responsibility for this disconnect in which some of our youth live? In considering what leads some youth to take desperate measures, such as occurred at Dawson yesterday, should we not take into account the present and future of war, militarism and the hooligan culture devoid of any social responsibility which is being forced onto society as the only way to sort out problems?
This society is creating great problems for the youth. Law and order and military solutions and facile explanations will not deal with these problems; they will only make them worse. Whatever happens, we should not let these events be used for partisan political gain, or to impose an agenda that goes against the interests of the society. Solutions must come out of a broad discussion amongst the polity on the overall direction of the society and how to turn things around.

Five years of war.

Five years of slaughter, Invasion, military occupation, rape, pillaging and fascism.

In this "war on terror" there are martyrs on both sides, one of the worst features of a holy war.
In the west it is the "War on Terror"; In the east, this conflict is just an extension of the crusades.

They estimate that 3000 people died in the attacks on the World Trade center of September 11th. On the other hand, at least 6,000 people died in the initial attack on Afghanistan.
Did the people of Afghanistan ask for death any more than the people in the world trade center?
Of course, many more have died in Afghanistan since. Afghani women have been raped by occupying forces, babies are being born deformed due to depleted uranium used in the Allied
forces bombs and ammunition, Afghani resistance against the occupation are labeled "Taliban
fighters", even when there is no evidence that they support the Taliban government, to demonize them in the press.

So three thousand people died in the United States on 9/11, so now thousands more need to die in the Muslim world. This is an acceptable logic to most of the North American population. Blinded by revenge, a large section of the American population continues to turn a blind eye to American fascism at home and over seas, as well as firmly supporting all wars of imperialistic expansion.

While the developments in Iraq are well publicized by the political left, Afghanistan is rarely and barely mentioned. Many liberals and Social-democratic reformists have put forward the viewpoint that " The war in Iraq is unjust, but the war in Afghanistan is okay." This shows the completely slanted effect of bourgeoisie propaganda on the liberal left, as there is so little attention given to Afghanistan by the left wing. Many among the political left hold the viewpoint
that Afghanistan "Asked for it", and that Afghanistan was a "terrorist state", and that the Taliban was "reactionary". Of course the government of Afghanistan was not necessarily progressive, but that isn't for us to decide. Regime change starts at home. Invasion of a sovereign nation to "liberate the people from their tyrannical government" is Imperialism,
nothing more, nothing less. Even the revolutionary left, the Marxist-Leninist left, often mentions Afghanistan as a mere footnote.

So the only information on Afghanistan comes from the bourgeoisie owned media. The Imperialist news sources publish a sob story every time an allied soldier is killed, and patriotic
war-mongering every time that allied soldiers kill "Taliban" insurgents. No analysis of the imperialist nature of allied soldiers in Afghanistan is provided by the mainstream news, and the involvement of Canada in this war of imperialism is very rarely questioned. How can you compare killing a soldier, who is part of an occupation force, to killing civilians who are native to the occupied nation? Killing an invader is a right, killing a native insurgent is a crime.

Although it is very unpopular to say, this must be said: The United States asked for the events of September 11, 2001. The victims of the world trade center didn't ask for it, and neither did many of the broad masses of the American people, but the United States Government has been asking for an ass-kicking for a very long time. It is strange to find how everyone was shocked by 9/11. The events of September 11th were a perfectly logical,and
predictable, result of an aggressive foreign policy and Imperialist agenda put forward by the United States on every continent, in every country. A nation can not become a successful imperialist power without creating enemies in the peoples of many nations, in many lands.
Someone was bound to do it. Even if the US did manage to completely avert 9/11 , arresting all of the hijackers before they left their homes, It was bound to happen again.
Someone who had seen his family blown to bits by an Apache helicopter, someone who had seen the president he voted for "removed" by the United States military, someone who's children pick bananas 16 hours a day for an American company, anyone with anger against the United States, was bound to do it. Even an American citizen, born and raised, would have done something, as has been proven at Waco, at Oklahoma city, by the Montana freemen, the
Uni-bomber,etc. These elements may not be progressive, but the fact remains that they have released some anger against the United States.

Also, not to sound like a conspiracy nut, the United States government made a lot of gains from the martyrdom of the World Trade Center. They most likely had a hand in the attack, as they seem to be the sole beneficiaries of this attack. Even on the slim chance that they were in no way involved, it makes no difference. The principal stays the same. A terrorist attack was the logical outcome of their countries Imperialist foreign policy.

Some people compare 9/11 to Pearl harbor; this is not a proper comparison. Pearl harbor was a military strike, a conflict between two Imperialist states. 9/11 also may have been an imperialist venture, but to many peoples of the world, 9/11 was the ass kicking that the American imperialists richly deserved. This shows the millions upon millions ( If not billions) who are enraged with United States Imperialism.

As usual, the American Imperialists will commemorate this occasion to try to rekindle patriotism, and rekindle public support for United States militarism in the Middle East, as well as many other countries.

Is there a ceremony for all of the thousands that have been killed in Afghanistan?
Is there a ceremony for the hundreds of thousands of people killed in Iraq?
Is there a ceremony for all of those that have been killed, on all continents, in all countries, by United States Imperialism?

This "War on terror", this Crusade, is only further irritating the problem. Spectacular strikes against the United States of America will take place in the future, from forces both external and internal. In the meantime, the United States military trains a new generation of orphans, a new generation of widowed and crippled, to harbor a hatred that words can not explain for American Imperialism.

As the Capitalist class creates their own grave diggers, Imperialism also creates it's own grave diggers in every land that it touches. Imperialism can not survive in the face of national liberation struggles and peoples war.

Five years of Imperialist war. Only the will of the masses will prevent another five years from happening.

North Korea: fact and fiction

My personal opinions on the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea, commonly referred to as North Korea, have done a complete turn around within only a few short years. I guess I actually had to meet some North Koreans, at the 16th World Festival of Democratic Youth and students in Venezuela, for me to realize the extent of the vicious propaganda against the people of North Korea.

Anyways, now I find myself bristling at all Anti-Korean propaganda, slander that I once voiced myself.

Now, at this time I'm still admittedly not the most qualified person to defend the sovereign nation of Korea against slander, but I can't be any worse qualified than those that slander it.
I have never been to the DPRK, but neither have many prominent figures who speak against it, so this is not necessarily a requirement.

Of course we have all heard allegations about North Korea: Everyone is starving, The government arrests people and tortures them in gulags, and people have to worship giant statues of Kim Il Sung, and there are thousands of orphans, and they are preparing for nuclear war, and they're cannibals, and Kim Jong Il kidnaps women to be his prostitutes, etc, etc.

Wow, if I thought any of these allegations were true, I would be calling for the immediate invasion of the DPRK too. I mean, any state that disfunctional and un-realistically sinister
would require immediate removal. I think that my description fits the allegations against North Korea very well: Un-realistically sinister. The evil attributed to the DPRK is not the type of plausible malice attributed to Hitlers Germany, but rather ridiculous comic book villainy, and
un-necessary gore for added shock value.

The biggest flaw with the Anti-Korean propaganda being disseminated is that the various factions of the Anti- Korean movement can not present one unified view of "Stalinist Korea".
All of the allegations against the DPRK are not necessarily accepted by all of the Anti-Korean
analysts. In the last year alone, I have watched at least four or five separate Anti-Korean documentaries, all from different sources, and with the exception of the allegations of starvation (which I will come back to), these five documentaries shared very few common allegations against the DPRK.

Every one of these documentaries was made so anecdotally, with a complete absence of evidence
and an over-abundance of speculation. One film maker in the documentary Children of the Secret state ( Note the blatantly biased title,) repeatedly fills his documentary with pure baseless allegations such as "there may be 200,000 street children in North Korea..." What do you mean there "may be""? "Up to three million people have starved to death in the last ten years." What do you mean "up to"?If you can not confirm this statistic, then why have you put into your film? This is the film makers way of spreading baseless notions against the DPRK, without assuming any responsibility for their legitimacy. It is truly a diabolical and vulgar act. This documentary also bases allegations of the existence of gulags entirely on Art work that was allegedly drawn by prisoners who escaped from these alleged gulags. Anyone who scans this documentary for a shred of evidence will be sorely disappointed.

The CNN network documentary Inside the Secret state, another obscene example of negative imagery worked into the title to influence viewer opinion before any arguments are made, featured alleged footage of a prisoner execution, which was much more blurry and grainy than any videos of the loch ness monster that I have seen to date. In the footage, you see a small figure, possibly a human, fall down in the distance. From this, CNN deduces that a prisoner has been executed by firing squad. The rest of the film focuses around a few shots of a person putting a sign (In Korean) on a bridge, and this is supposed to signify that "The writing is on the wall" So to speak, and that the winds of change are blowing in North Korea. Pretty pathetic, even if the footage is authentic. There are some interviews with those that "escaped" from the DPRK, which Ironically prove to be the most damning against the documentary, as an "escaped" North Korean woman reveals how disillusioned she is with capitalism and the reality of "Paradise" in South Korea. In every one of these documentaries, the actual testimony of the Korean people always casts doubt on the Film makers allegations, no matter how they try to twist this testimony to their favor.

I especially love allegations about cannibalism. Since the days of ancient Rome, one of the most effective ways to dehumanize a rival culture in the eyes of your people is to accuse them of acts cannibalism, arguably one of the only universal social taboos. Allegations of cannibalism have the power to equate any culture with savage barbarism instantaneously, and are rarely ever investigated for legitimacy. The Aboriginal peoples of North and South America, as well as numerous other countries, have been accused of cannibalism several times by colonial occupiers, whether these acts are actually practiced or not. Can anyone prove that the caribe people of Haiti and Cuba committed acts of cannibalism, when they are now extinct and the source of these accusations was the imperialist Spaniards? The same goes for the people of the DPRK, and these accusations of cannibalism have just as much foundation as the rest of the allegations made against the DPRK.

The allegations of Kim Jong Il's harem of kidnapped women is also an unfounded allegation based on social taboo. In this case, the dear leader is accused of the social taboo of sexual slavery, and is therefore uncivilized. The allegations of sexual slavery are even more anecdotal
than previous allegations, lacking even former "Sex slaves" to come forward and tell their sad story to the grateful film makers. Basically, we have to take the film makers word for it, that
women are being kidnapped and forced into Kim jong Il's harem.

The ever present criticism of the "Cult of personality" in North Korea is Hypocrisy, especially when coming from the United States, which is quasi-religious about their own revolution. While the DPRK has a giant statue of Kim Il Sung in Pyonyang, the US has a giant statue of Lincoln in Washington, as well as the monolithic faces of some of their former leaders inscribed into the face of a mountain. The DPRK celebrates the birthdays of Kim Jong Il and Kim Il Sung, while the US celebrates Lincoln's birthday and Washington's birthday, as well as a national holiday on the anniversary of their country's revolutionary triumph. While the DPRK refers to their former president as the "Great leader", the United States refers to their former Presidents as "the founding fathers". Monarchist countries like Great Britain, which has an actual despot rather than a perceived despot, can not comment on this alleged North Korean "cult of personality" either.

And then of course, there is the nuclear issue. This is the lowest common denominator in Imperialist fear-mongering , used against Iraq, Iran, Cuba, the USSR, etc, in the past.
Because the mouthpieces of anti-Korean propaganda can't Sufficiently convince the peoples of the world that the people of the DPRK are suffering at the hands of their government, they have to
spread fear of hostile actions, especially nuclear exercises, by the DPRK against other nations.
As I have already stated, this is the ultimate hypocrisy. It is the United States and other Imperialist powers that are hostile to the DPRK, not the other way around. Besides, the meager
nuclear weapons capabilities of the DPRK pale in comparison to the vast arsenal of the United States, and many others that criticize North Korea, all of which posses more advanced nuclear weapons, greater stockpiles and a worse nuclear track record than the DPRK.

The only argument against the DPRK with any shred of truth is the allegations of national food crisis, which I am getting back to now. First of all, this isn't a secret. The Workers party of Korea has admitted their food shortage. The only problem with this allegation are the motivations behind it. The anti-Korean forces seek to blame the current government, the socialist government, of the DPRK for the food crisis. This is absolutely ridiculous, swinging back to the capitalist notion that "communist countries are often poor, therefore communism generates poverty."This is a deliberate twisting of cause and effect; Countries are not poor because they are communist, they are communist because they are poor. If these countries were so prosperous before communism , why did they turn to communism in the first place? As far as agricultural production is concerned, the USSR and China topped the list of produce and livestock producing countries during most of of the duration of the cold war, and both had socialist governments like the DPRK. Besides ,Plant growth is influenced by factors such as precipitation, soil fertility and sunlight, not political climate. There is also the allegations of elitism on the part of the Workers Party of Korea, saying that all of the food is diverted to the elite from the peasants, an allegation without foundation. The actual causes, the materialist causes, of the North Korean food crisis are overlooked by the forces of media reaction, as they are not beneficial to the cause of DPRK regime change. The DPRK is about 120,540 sq km, and only about 22.4% is arable land. This means that it can produce only around 27000 .96 km of crops, and in addition to this there are frequent droughts in the spring, followed by floods. The other major factor in the Korean food crisis are the economic sanctions and trade embargo of the United States of America, limiting food aid and constricting international trade. These things there is tangible evidence of, and mostly I just got my information from the CIA world fact book, a reactionary source.

I hope that I have set down a working model of self defense in response to the allegations of Anti-Korean forces. If nothing else, the reactionary forces must be told that it is the right of the peoples of Korea and all other nations to enjoy national sovereignty, free of the ambitions of Imperialism. No matter what slander you may throw at them, the DPRK stands tall in the face of aggression, and the people of Korea will not cower to global imperialism.

Life in a glass house

For a very long time now, I've found myself having to constantly defend my ideology (Marxism-Leninism) against criticism. Of course, the people who are criticizing my ideology subscribe to Bourgeois ideologies, all of which have more than a few skeletons in their own closets. Does that seem right?

How can a member of the Liberal party of Canada criticize my party,The Communist Party of Canada (Marxist-Leninist), for anything? The Liberal party has robbed the people of Canada over the course of many administrations, is responsible for the continued subjugation of the Aboriginal peoples of what is now Canada, as well as the continued stranglehold of un-wanted Canadian federalism on Quebec, and French minorities in the other provinces, getting us into the war in Afghanistan in the first place, and yet they feel that they can throw stones?

The Social Democratic NDP is no better in this respect ( Bingogate*, anyone?), and the disgustingly Bourgeois Bloc Quebecois not only supports the most superficial brand of
Quebec sovereignty, but also the ratification of NORAD, bringing Canada and Quebec deeper into the grasp of American global imperialism. Sadly, both of these sides claim to be progressive.

But the one party/political ideal that always takes the moral high ground, for reasons that continue to elude me, are the Conservatives.

Now when, I speak of the conservatives, understand my full meaning. Usually I am referring to the Conservative party of Canada, but I also sometimes include the other flavours of Canadian conservatism as well, such as the Progressive Canadian party, the fledgling Alberta Alliance,the remenants of the Social Credit party, reactionary rags like the Western Standard, and various other think-tanks and political organizations.

Even when referring to the Conservative party of Canada, I include all of the various incarnations of the Conservative party, past to present, from their early reactionary stance of towing the line of British Imperialism, to their various mergers with the Progressives and then Canadian alliance/reform party, to the current party of Stephen Harper.

As I have stated many times before, I can not understand the allure of conservatism, and I most likely never will. Conservatism is a system that makes no promises to the working class majority. The most reactionary elements of the working class tow the line of the bourgeoisie , and yet do not seem to benefit from it in any way, and probably never will.

My Conservative friend tells me that the Conservative party of Canada has done so many good things for Canada. I ask her to give me an example, and she says that they have lowered taxes, to which I say "Where do you think Social programs come from?" as is one of the slogans of the Marxist-Leninist party, "Stop paying the rich, increase funding for social programs." She replied "Oh yeah, I forgot; you're a Socialist.", and the disgust was apparent in her voice. The conversation ended as though she had somehow made a remarkable insight or snappy argument, when in actuality she had not answered my question, nor provided me with insight into her point of view. Truly an interesting demonstration of Conservative ideological hegemony.

What does conservatism offer to any person who is not a member of the capitalist class?
Conservatism only offers financial breaks for the obscenely wealthy, dissolution of any existing social programs, a hostile foreign policy and an equally hostile domestic policy. Even worse, the crisis of modern conservatism is so desperate that conservatism has had to merge with the most reactionary wings of Christianity to try to appeal to the people, which is a necessity, given their elitist economic policies, and pseudo-facist agenda. The modern conservative movement has had to adopt the puritanical ideals of a religion that shares absolutely nothing in common with conservatism, all in the name of continuing to propagate a failed economic system. Homophobic tendencies, opposition to evolutionary theory and abortion, as well as the promotion of a puritanical moral code illustrate the recent priorities of the modern conservative movement in many nations, as well as the complete bankruptcy of it's ideology. Truly, upholding the agenda of religious zealotry is a new low for a constantly mutating, bourgeois political ideology.

The Conservative party of Canada is a party that has opposed homosexual marriage, continued to involve Canada in the quagmires of Afghanistan and Haiti, tried to destroy what remains of nationalized health care in Alberta(and is still trying), bowed to all pressures of the United States of America, drastically slashed social programs, drastically slashed environmental protection legislation and passed the devious Bill C2, which allows the state to interfere in the internal workings of political parties under the guise of "federal accountability". All of this in addition to the standard misappropriation of funds, backroom dealing, etc. Not bad for a party that came into office most recently on less than 40% of the vote. Ugh.

People hassle me about alleged crimes committed in a country across an ocean, decades ago, by parties with similar political ideals to my own, and yet they ignore the actual crimes committed against the peoples of Canada and Quebec by the Canadian capitalist parties.

Still, I guess I can't complain. The conservative party continues to pursue un-popular policies
and staunchly uphold reactionary zealotry and American imperialism, desperately clinging to their paltry base of supporters. Conservatism is in crisis, and from here it will either give way to Liberal reformism, or full blown fascism.

I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

*Bingogate was a scandal that occurred during the administration of former Premier of British Columbia Michael Harcourt, involving the skimming of charity funds for use by the ruling NDP.

These days it really is quite amazing when I look back at some of my early political developments. At first I wasn't very progressive at all. I repeated a lot of second hand opinions from my conservative step-father, opinions that were not my own, with a complete lack of political consciousness.

As I moved on, I started to become more Social-democratic in practice, a fan of the Reformist/liberal Michael Moore. I watched his Labour-aristocratic documentaries, I read his
Liberal-reformist analysis of global politics, and basically adopted his outlook of world politics.
It wasn't Marxism, but it was a shove in the general direction of the political left.

From there, thankfully, there were other developments that pushed me even farther to the left.
I became a Marxist, albeit an Intellectual one. My orthodox, ivory tower approach to Marxism, which shunned the deviational revisionism of Leninism, and the alleged atrocities of Anti-revisionism, eventually gave way to adoption of the Leninist interpretation of Marxism after further studying and organizing.

From this watered down, parliamentary democratic outlook on Leninism, I finally metamorphosized into my present incarnation, into an Anti-Revisionist Marxist-Leninist.
thankfully, I have continued to progress to a more revolutionary level each time.

From looking back at my own political development, I look at the political development of others who are close to me, and it is somewhat surreal, especially those who are now at a level I left behind a long time ago.

Most recently, as I stated in my previous post, I have become very aware of my own distaste with the general criticism of the American fascist leader George W Bush. This is strange for me, as at one time I was doing the exact same thing. Criticizing Bush doesn't seem incorrect, as it is undoubtedly well deserved, it just seems to have ulterior motives, which I have not noticed before.

The mass media, the talking-heads of bourgeoisie political analysis, and pop-culture in general are all promoting criticism of George Bush. Even his own republican party cronies are betraying him. This is very strange, as George W Bush is made out to be one of the principal leaders, or at least a frontman, of the capitalist class.

Why would the capitalist class, which owns all media, controls all political analysis, and has roots in all of the major political parties, not suppress the rampant criticism of the "president", let along encourage it?

As Chairman Mao Tse Tung wrote, "In the world today, all culture, all literature and art belong to definite classes and are geared to definite political lines." The mass media of the bourgeoisie promotes the interests of the bourgeoisie, so why would the bourgeoisie be blaming all of their problems on one of their own, a man that they blatantly stole an election in order to install as their president.

Who is benefiting from this culture of Bush Bashing? How is the Capitalist class benefiting from the popular criticism of their man in Washington?

As near as I can see, the actions of this "President" seem to be in line with the interests of the Capitalist class: realization of a long awaited plan for war in Iraq, unconditional support for the state of Israel and the Cuban exiles, harnessing the reactionary masses by appealing to their religious fundamentalism, promotion of corporate interests in every corner of the globe, amnesty for reactionary terrorists, vigilant action against socialism, etc. As near as I can see, George W Bush has upheld the agenda of the capitalist class very well.

So why are they disowning him now?

I think the most likely reason that the capitalist class is turning on the fascist war chief ,that they themselves put into power, is for the purposes of damage control. Things have not gone according to plan. American Imperialism in Iraq is spiraling out of control, the economy of the USA is in crisis, the puritanical laws passed by the Bush administration are being met with more resistance than was expected, the heroic forces of the Lebanese people are receiving more support against the fascist Israelis than they predicted, corporate criminals and war criminals are being faced with the overwhelming demands of the people to answer for their crimes, and on May Day millions of illegal immigrants, the back bone of the American way of life, took a stand against the fascist measures of the bourgeoisie.

Things have gone very wrong indeed. The people are angry with their leaders, but more importantly, they are angry with the system itself. At this time, the masses are very close to awakening, to the realization of social and political consciousness. This must be averted at all costs, hence the capitalist class has chosen a whipping boy. The mighty warchief has become the international scapegoat, and he is now actively shunned by those that benefited the most from his regime. Or at least, he is publicly shunned. Behind closed doors, who knows what dealings still take place.

The whipping boy has been presented to the masses, in desperate hopes that he will be blamed for all the problems and spectacular failures of the policies of the capitalist classes. So far this tactic seems to be working, as the guilt for all crimes Political, military, environmental and economic, has been thrust onto the shoulders of the hapless warchief, completely absolving the Republican party, the Democratic party, the multi-national corporations, the CIA, Special interest organizations and the entire state and imperialist class of America from the responsibility of their failed agenda.

Personally, I blame the puppeteers before I cast blame on the puppet.

Occasionally when I'm on blogger, I decide to look at other blogs. This is usually a mistake.

Most of the stuff I find is just strange, juvenile or useless. I don't care about your cats, or how cute they look in any of the 500 pictures you have of them. I don't really care that you were at a wedding last week, mostly because I don't know you. And above all, I REALLY don't care which famous people are screwing each other lately.

My primary preoccupation is with politics. I am interested in the analysis of social conditions, economic trends and political actions. And on this subject, I am also thoroughly disappointed.

On a good day, the best that I'm going to find on another political blog is some mediocre bashing of George W Bush. While I am in no way, shape or form a friend of the fascist war chief Bush, I am so unimpressed by Bush-bashing. It's so fashionable to slam the Bush administration these days, not to mention easy and superficial. All of the opinions I hear about the war in Iraq are Liberal-Reformist at best, not to mention cloned and un-original. Now there is the odd person who takes a revolutionary stand against Bush, but mostly you have these Liberal ideologues, whose only problem with the war in Iraq is that Americans are getting killed, and it's coming out of their tax dollars. Pathetic.

Personally, I was criticizing George W Bush the WEEK AFTER 911 , long before the War in Iraq, or Afghanistan, or Liberals like Michael Moore made a documentary. While Criticism of the Bush administrations policies are relevant to the current situation, I find this to be a reformist point of view. You can not criticize the Bush administration/republican party if you are not also willing to criticize the Democratic party and the entire Imperialist state of the United States of America. Are the people so naive to believe that the Imperialist wars in Iraq/Afghanistan would not have happened under the Democratic Party of Gore/Kerry?
The problem is the Imperialistic State of America and the American bourgeoisie itself, not just one or two factions of the American capitalist class.

All of the other "Progressive" politics on these internet blogs include trying to make liberal or social democratic candidates look like they are different than conservative candidates (Ha!), Ultra-environmentalist/animal rights diversions from the actual problems faced by humanity and the crisis of our system, Amnesty international style "Humanitarianism" that basically focuses on mudslinging unpopular governments, and other social-democratic/liberal diversions that ignore the real problems, present no solutions, and tow the line of Imperialism.

"Animal rights"? How about we focus on giving HUMANS even the most basic rights which they are currently lacking, you petty bourgeois, hippy suburbanites!

Of course, all of this Social Democratic reformism at least has a basis of logic and science.
The other brand of political blogs are the conservative blogs, lacking in research, lacking in facts, pumped up with ignorance and blind patriotism. let's make one thing clear: Telling someone that they "Hate America!" in response to a logical argument is not rhetoric. If you have ever used the phrase " (Blank) hates America!" or "(Blank) Hates Freedom!", then you are a braying jack ass and need to go back to elementary school, preferably in a country other than the US.
Honestly, I can not even understand how conservatism attracts converts! How does anyone buy into conservatism? Say whatever you will about Marxism-Leninism, but in addition to being Scientific and logical, the theory is Humanist, based entirely on serving the people and mutual prosperity. Conservatism on the other hand, in addition to providing almost NO logical basis for it's theory, has absolutely NO humanist elements to it. This insane "Law of the Jungle", "Survival of the fittest" economic theory, bolstered by an intregal theory of Ultra-nationalist Imperialism, xenophobia to all other nations, cultural chauvinism, and muted undertones of patriarchy, elitism and white supremacy, somehow flourishes not just among the bourgeoisie, but among some of the working class. Even worse, the entire theoretical basis of modern Conservatism is not dog-eat-dog economics, but rather Christian Fundamentalism! I always have to keep myself from laughing when a Christian-Conservative is telling me how Communism will never work. Hey, I may believe in the inevitability of a classless society, but you believe in a virgin birth, a resurrection, a man living inside a whale, every species of animal escaping a deluge aboard a single wooden ship and a man walking on water. Somehow, I think I have the theoretical high ground.

So, where am I going with this anyway? What is the issue?

As near as I can figure, the blogosphere is an excellent illustration of not only the the total marginalization of the people under liberal democracy, but of the hegemony of ideology in a capitalist society. All ideologies under capitalism, wether they be Conservative, Liberal, Social Democratic, etc, all present the same view of the world, of human society, and basically put forward the same economic system, despite how deceptively different each ideology claims to be.

At one time, I thought the same way as everyone else. I exhibited blind patriotism, national chauvinism,complete ignorance and apathy of the world political, social and economic situation, and an overall confidence in the system of the state itself. But then a funny thing happened.
I graduated to grade 10. I started reading books of my own initiative, books that were not on the school curriculum, nor where they available in the school library. I started analyzing history from different perspectives. I started to keep up with current events. Ideologically, I became
anti-Imperialist, then anti-conservative, then anti capitalist, until finally I became Marxist.
I educated myself. In essence (forgive the pop-culture reference), I took the red pill.

Of course everyone has an opinion. Of course everyone has a right to an opinion. All I am suggesting is, do a little research. It may surprise you how uninformed you are.

For the last week or so, I was camping with some of my Comrades in Quebec.
I always enjoy this event, because with so many communists and progressive youth in one area, there is a lot of exciting discussion on every topic under the rainbow.

Anyways, one day the topic turned to Rap and hip hop culture. One of my Comrades argued that
the rapper Ice Cube was a progressive media influence because of the lyrics of some of his music. I personally strongly disagreed with this, as the majority of Ice Cubes music is not about
the plight of African Americans, just the typical "thug life" bullshit.

Anyways, from here things really took off, as I took that stand that not only Ice Cube, but Gangsta rap in general was not a progressive influence in the media, as far as the image of the black community was concerned. Let me tell you, I took a lot of criticism for this viewpoint from more than one comrade, on all sides. When I argued that Gangsta rap was misogynistic and sexist, the reply was "That's ( black) culture. Who are we to say it's misogynist". I got a similar response when I said that Gangsta rap only demeans the image of the black man as a savage. When I really tried to drive this point home, one of my comrades told me I couldn't really comment on the situation, as I am not black ( Neither was the Comrade in question, who also voiced his opinions on the subject. Hypocrite.).

I still stand by every word, and feel that my opinion is justified. Gangsta rap is not a progressive media influence at all, totally demeaning and undermining the struggle of the black community for equality.

Now let me make a distinction between rap and GANGSTA rap. Rap music originated in the black community, a grassroots form of expression that did not necessarily have any negative qualities inherent to it. There are many rappers/rap groups who are not a negative influence,
such as public enemy, Dead Prez, to name a few ( referred to as "Bourgie Rap" by a Comrade. Ironically, Gangsta rappers, who are propped up by wealthy capitalists are not "Bourgie rap" according to his criteria.).Gangsta rap is a bastardization of rap music and black culture, used by the corporate bourgeoisie to make profits and slander the entire black community simultaneously.

It has always been the tool of the bourgeoisie to divide and conquer, turning the various elements of the proletariat against one another. The best way to do this is by stirring up racism and ethnic ultra-nationalism within a population. Henceforth, the image of the black man as a savage has existed for a very long time, in many different forms. Gangsta rap is the latest form.

This is a different time. In the old days, you could have the grand dragon of the Ku Klux Klan on
a stage, preaching their poison against the black community. Now, times have changed. Now, a white person spreading hate propaganda would be easily identified as a racist. These days, you can't sell anti-African propaganda through a white spokes person. You need a black spokesperson
to slander their own race for this propaganda to be effective.

Also, legitimate black music, especially rap, was very threatening to the bourgeoisie. It couldn't be stomped out, so the Capitalist class realized that in order to destroy rap music, they would have to appropriate it.

And from these two initiatives Gangsta rap was born.

I am so sickened by my comrades who say that "Who are you to judge? It is black culture."
Oh really? So gender discrimination and objectification of women are "black culture"? Drive-by shootings, gang violence and murder are "black culture"? Rampant drug use and violent crimes are "black culture"? This viewpoint cloaks itself in progressive terminology, but is so overwhelmingly racist it's painful. This dramatically illustrates that even the most progressive elements of our society have bought in to this racist bullshit being shoved down the throats of the masses.

In actuality, this is basic biological determinism, otherwise known as Social Darwinism, the science of fascism. These racist notions are being spoon-fed to the masses in the form of music
and television. My own comrades, people who I thought knew better, reveal that they also have this deep rooted belief that black people and violence, crime and sexism go together, like spaghetti and meatballs. This is a very disturbing revelation.

Don't get me wrong. I love rap. I also love gangsta rap. But my personal preferences are irrelevant. Gangsta rap is still regressive and detrimental to the image of the black community.

When you turn on the news, you see the massacre of the month in Uganda, Sudan, Sierre Leone,etc. Than you switch channels to MTV, and you have some rapper waving guns and smacking hos and smoking dope. These are both the exact same image of the black race, being promoted by the media.
The white community (Even my fellow communists) are learning to fear, or at least accept, the inherent violence and barbarism attributed to "black culture". The black community are forced to contend with their only representatives in the media, made to emulate these gangstas and Hos, pressured into accepting this"culture" as their own.

In the meantime, the corporate bourgeoisie sleeps sound, knowing that their white subjects live in fear of the black man, their black subjects are being pressured into total rejection of all things cultural, and all the while they are making money off of the records. The perfect crime, executed to perfection.

Join the Work of CPC(M-L) as the Crucial Ingredient to Turn Historic Success into Historic Victory!
On the occasion of the 67th anniversary of the birth of Comrade Hardial Bains, the founder and leader of the Communist Party of Canada (Marxist-Leninist), and the 17th anniversary of the historic Party meeting in Chertsey, Quebec, the Party sends revolutionary greetings to its members and supporters and the revolutionary forces across Canada and around the world.
This year, at a time untold crimes and atrocities are being unleashed on the peoples by U.S. imperialism and world reaction, the Party's organizations at every level are highlighting Comrade Bains' leadership which imbued us with his deep conviction in the victory of the new over the old. In speaking to this conviction, Comrade Bains stressed the objective role of the working class as that class brought forward by the capitalist society to give rise to the new and the role of the communist party in unleashing the human factor/social consciousness to realize the victory of the new.
At the Chertsey meeting in 1989, Comrade Bains spoke about the crucial role the Communist Party plays in this regard. Emphasizing the emergence of the new personality in Canada, brought into being and nurtured by the Party, he gave what has become a clarion call to the Party. Comrade Bains said, "A new communist has come into being on this soil of Canada, nurtured by our Marxist-Leninist party. With such a new personality, do you think that they can smash us, destroy us? I say to you... we will become millions, you watch us -- because we represent what the working class wants." The nurturing of this new personality was not left to chance but was planned and organized by the Party.
Comrade Bains made these remarks during the period of transition from flow of revolution to retreat. It might be thought that in the period after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the bi-polar division of the world, when revolution had gone from a period of flow into retreat, that this conviction in the victory of the new might be shaken. Far from it, Comrade Bains maintained that by taking its stand for the new and advancing that struggle, the Party was unshakeable. Speaking in 1994, five years after Chertsey, he said, "The retreat of revolution has provided the bourgeoisie and world imperialism with a lot of confidence and euphoria that a new equilibrium has come into being, that in this new equilibrium they will set the law and everything will be fine. However this new equilibrium has not come into being." He predicted that this euphoria of imperialism would create new disasters and so it has. He said that in spite of all the protests and opposition by the working class and peoples of the world, the imperialists will carry on along an unpopular path as if nothing had happened, as if conditions are still favourable to them and that the peoples are reconciled to their fate.
Comrade Bains elaborated that these circumstances placed capitalism in the position of contempt and as a target of attack by the peoples all over the world. He emphasized, "This means that there are signs under the present circumstances that the working class is undergoing re-awakening. This means that the period of retreat of revolution will soon be transformed into one of flow of revolution. What it is telling the communist parties is that they must carry on with their plans for the future, with their plans to create the subjective conditions for revolution." He continued, "The working class is already beginning to think about another unthinkable, that this capitalism can be overthrown. In 1994, already assaults on capital have begun."
Comrade Bains spoke to the importance of the work of the Party in this situation, where he emphasized that things are going to change with a new social upheaval in the making. "Five years ago when counter-revolution was beginning such a momentum with the retreat of revolution, CPC(M-L) did not waver and carried on with the implementation of the plan it had worked out in 1970 to create the subjective conditions for revolution. At the same time, it showed the resilience that it can cope with these conditions and worked out a platform of democratic renewal within these present circumstances, appealing to the broadest sections of the people that even under these circumstances there is a path for progress. CPC(M-L) during this period proved that it is not and never was a propaganda sect which only believes in some principles or advocated some dogma and utopia but was not a political force. Far from it, it proved that it is a political force which has emerged to have a trial of strength with the bourgeoisie."
Today in 2006, we have seen the assaults on capitalism multiply and grow. There is broad anger and rejection of U.S. imperialism and its wars of aggression and rejection of Canada's participation in these wars and the world-wide anti-social offensive. There is ever-growing rejection of the anti-social offensive and the efforts by the ruling class to eliminate the necessity of society to take up its social responsibility and provide for the needs of its members. The dark path of fascism and war is being rejected by the peoples world wide, while the demand for another world has come to the fore. The Party is meeting this trial of strength by consolidating its forces and developing the work to build the mass communist party. It is responding to the growing interest and demand for communism, as the working class and people seek solutions to the problems of the day. The Party is working out its tactics and social forms, such as the Marxist-Leninist Party Clubs, to ensure that communism is not a matter of phrases, but that it emerges from the very lives and conditions of the people.
The conviction in the victory of the new continues to imbue the work of the Party. On this anniversary of Comrade Bains' birth we renew his call to join the work of CPC(M-L) as the crucial ingredient for bringing about the victory of the new. Comrade Bains said, "The work is at a takeoff point for the greatest revolutionary developments that humankind has ever witnessed. CPC(M-L) is the most decisive conscious force for this revolutionary transformation in Canada, a detachment of the International Marxist-Leninist Communist Movement, contributing towards the same internationally. Let all workers, women, youth and students, and all enlightened forces join CPC(M-L). The act of joining CPC(M-L) will itself be a great leap forward for the creation of a new and affirmed humanity, in which every act of human beings becomes another act for that affirmation, the measure of what is truly human.

There are four Trotskyist Organizations in Canada that I know of.

There are also two Maoist organizations In Canada.

There are two Anti-Revisionist(Stalinist) organizations in Canada as well.

In addition to all of these groups, there is also the revisionist Communist Party of Canada.

Wow. This is one of the most insane things I've ever heard of.

Okay, I get it that Anti-Revisionists and Trots have a hard time cooperating. But apparently, the Trots in Canada can't cooperate with themselves, as is dramatically illustrated in the factioning of the Canadian Trotskyist movement.

The Maoists, who are always so quick to denounce every one else in the communist movement, also have two parties in Canada. One of these Maoist parties actively denounces the other on a regular basis. Absolutely Incredible.

And there are two Anti-revisionist organizations in Canada as well, or at least as far as I know.
There is the Communist party of Canada (Marxist-Leninist) and the Canadian friends of the Soviet People, an organization mostly known for it's own publication "North Star Compass."There is not the same amount of animosity between CPC-ML and North Star Compass, as some members of CPC-ML read North Star Compass, and The Canadian friends of
the soviet people is an organization, rather than a political party. Still, this division among Anti-revisionists is notable, and mostly un-necessary.

And then there is the revisionist CPC, which gobbles up all of the bourgeois Communists who follow a watered down form of Marxism-Leninism within the parameters of Parliamentary democracy. Their movement has stayed remarkably unified, mostly because when people leave the CPC, they are so disillusioned with revisionism, that they join one of the other brands of communism or the Social democratic NDP, rather form their own organization with politics similar to the CPC.

Incredible. At present, the Canadian communist movement is a joke.

As Comrade Hardial Baines of CPC-ML observed, this is the era of retreat of revolution, so at this time there is only one Communist movement, wether other parties recognize it or not. Now is not the time to break into camps and defend against revisionism. Now is the time to join with all progressive elements of the Canadian political left, against Canadian imperialism and global imperialism in general.

It is pretty sad though, when you can't cooperate, let alone merge, with a group that holds identical political views to your own group, as is the case with the myriad of Trotskyist organizations in Canada.

Cuba Si! Yanqui no!

Today is Moncada day, the 53rd anniversary of the storming of the Moncada garrison by Fidel Castros forces in the first action of the Cuban revolution. Granted the action was a failure, and lead to Castros imprisonment, as well as all of the other leaders, but it was the first action against the Cuban dictatorship of Batista, and heralded the coming victorious revolution.

But, the forces of international reaction have not given up.

The United States have outlined their new plans for a "free Cuba", a Cuba brought back into the fold of American imperialism. The United States plans to return all of the land expropriated from Cuban exiles to their original owners, effectively evicting thousands of Cubans in the process. It has been almost 50 years, and still America refuses to leave Cuba alone.

The Miami Cuban "Friendship Organizations", many of which are fronts for drug smuggling operations, effectively control Americas foreign policy towards socialist Cuba. These Cuban Exiles, and descendants of exiles, have been plotting against Cuba for many years, and they will all be dead and in the grave before they let up.

The American economic embargo of Cuba is still in place, supported by the USA and it's colonies,
Israel, Micronesia and Palau. American Radio propaganda is broadcast into Cuba with the hopes of turning the people against the revolution, from planes equipped with loud speakers that violate Cuban airspace.

What could possibly be the point of all of these overly elaborate and costly attacks on Cuba? What is America so afraid of?

The same reason America bombards Cuba with propaganda and strangles their trade is the exact same reason that they invaded Grenada. It is the exact same reason that they financed a coup against President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela. It is the exact same reason that they armed the most reactionary death squads in Nicaragua and El Salvador.

The reason is very simple: America can not tolerate the presence of a peoples revolution anywhere, but especially not in their own backyards. The existence of any Socialist state on the North/South American continents, is a very grave threat to the empire.

Cuba is not scary because they have missiles, or a formidable army. Cuba is scary because they have Nationalized healthcare, and free education, public housing and wage equality. Cuba is scary because they have Socialism and take care of their people, no matter how desperate the situation is. This is very scary, because America doesn't want Latin America to rise up from under their thumb, nor do they want their own citizens getting any ideas from successful revolutions in other countries.

The only good news is, at least Cuba no longer stands alone. Both Venezuela and Bolivia are allied with Cuba now, and hopefully will stand by Cuba if they are needed.

So, this basically marks the 53rd anniversary of revolutionary armed conflict on the island of Cuba, therefore Moncada day is an anniversary, a celebration of the Cuban revolution, and another year that it has endured. So here's to 53 years of the Cuban revolution, may they have at least 53 more.

Israel gets away with Murder (Literally)!

The Middle east is currently raging, as it is torn apart by armed conflict, in many different nations.

I know, I know, this isn't exactly a new development. The Middle east has been torn apart by armed conflict since before I was born. But at this time, it seems to be a little bit more turbulent than usual.

The United States, and allies are (Unjustly) occupying Iraq and Afghanistan, Pressure is being exerted on Iran and Syria by the US, and most recently Israel has arrested around half of the Palestinian government and has bombed their neighbouring nation of Lebanon.

This most recent development is most disturbing. At the very least, when the United States, UK and other nations invade and occupy sovereign nations, they are criticized for doing so. Israel, on the other hand, acts with impunity.

First of all, I would like to establish that I am not an anti-Semite. It is necessary to say so, because whenever you say something true, but un-flattering about Israel, the more reactionary elements of the Zionist community will label you an anti-Semite faster than you can say "Heil Hitler".

It is absolutely unbelievable. Which other nation can invade countries, assassinate targets in other nations, arrest democratically elected ministers and instate a form of apartheid against
another ethnic group within their nation, all without so much as a stern look from the world governments.

Any government that does speak out against the actions of Israel, is painted as akin to the third Reich by the United States and it's colonies. Any group that rises up against the Israeli government, such as Hamas and Hezbollah, are portrayed as terrorist killers, rather than organizations defending and avenging their people.

At this point in time, the Bush administration is not even trying to hide their unconditional support for Israel, and most recently Canadian Prime Minister Stephan Harper has parroted the exact same unquestionable justification of any action perpetrated by the Israeli government.

The Israeli government murders Palestinians with regularity, and gets away with it.
The Israeli government is murdering citizens of Lebanon, and is so far getting away with it, at least on the world diplomatic stage.
The Israeli government arrested half of the ministers of the DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED Hamas government, without any charges, and are getting away with it.
The Israeli government have thousands of prisoners, men, women and children, in concentration camps, and they are getting away with it.

And this system goes both ways, as Israel also un-conditionally supports the United States foreign and domestic policy. Israel is one of four countries (USA, Israel, Micronesia, Palau) that is still maintaining the economic embargo on Cuba.

But the tide is turning. This new assault on Lebanon is not being taken lightly by the peoples of the world. This aggression against the democratically elected Palestinian government is yet another black mark on Israel's record. Also, Israel's big brother, the United States of America, has it's own problems right now. This does not bode well for Israel, as their protector will not be able to spare any forces to protect them, should the need ever arise.

Just like children in day care, Israel is going to have to learn how to play nice with the other children , because their big brother isn't around, and when they get a beating, it's going to be a painful one.

Welcome to Wonderland

Recently, The Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea tested 7 Taepodong missiles by launching them into the sea of Japan.

And, of course, this has sparked international controversy.

The United States, Japan and Australia have united in their condemnation of the North Korean
Missile test, stating that stern consequences would follow.

Of course, no one points out that the United States itself possesses more missiles than any other nation on the planet, and has tested them on many occasions, often in other countries.

While every military analyst is filling the peoples minds with fear of the possibility that a North Korean missile could hypothetically hit America, no one points out the certainty that America can hit every country on the planet with it's own missiles. For some reason, that concept is not as disturbing, apparently.

Japan sides with the US, in the face of a possible nuclear threat from the DPRK.
And of course, no one would EVER point out that it was the US, not the DPRK, that has a precedent of going nuclear on Japan, which they have done on two occasions.

In fact, the United States is the ONLY nation to have ever used nuclear technology in a combat scenario. But of course, that isn't relevant right now.

Just like the invasion of Afghanistan isn't relevant right now. Just like the un-democratic Israeli aggression against Gaza and the democratically elected Hamas government isn't relevant right now. The overwhelming insurgency of the people of Iraq against the United States invaders isn't relevant right now, either.

What is relevant, is that the DPRK has presented an opportunity for the American bourgeoisie to use their wonderful mechanisms of lies, twisting, exaggeration and blind patriotism to cook up a new batch of propaganda against the government of the DPRK.

This is what it is like to live in Wonderland;To live in this strange world, were everything is upside down, and nothing makes sense.

The United States beats the nuclear threat into everyone's heads, and uses it as a fear mongering tactic against their enemies, such as Iraq, Iran and the DPRK. And in this crazy world of wonderland, this makes total sense, even though the US has the worst track record of any nuclear power, in terms of quantity, testing and Usage. Only in wonderland does it make sense that the worst Nuclear fiend on earth gets to be the one to police all of the other nuclear powers.

The United States does nothing but criticize Islam,and the Islamic world for their religious fanaticism and rule by terror. Of Course, Religious fanaticism and rule by terror in Israel, and even the United States, is perfectly fine. Hey, welcome to wonderland!

The USA criticizes Cuba and the DPRK for allegedly having an undemocratic government, where their leaders are not elected. On the other hand, it is common knowledge that George.W Bush fixed the presidential election in the year 2000, and is by no means the legitimate leader of the USA. By this logic, it makes no sense for him to criticize other countries as un-democratic, but in wonderland it makes perfect sense.

Only in Wonderland can a country that has officially invaded two nations, and sent military forces to countless others to intervene in their democracy, as well as financing coups, rigging elections and pursuing an aggressive imperialist foreign policy,claim to be the defender of Freedom and Democracy.

Only in wonderland can a country aggressively invade other nations in the name of defending the homeland. If your country is invading , it is not defending anything. That is, unless your in wonderland. If so, then the concept of defending your country by invading other countries makes total sense. Why not?

In the topsy-turvy world of wonderland, it's not okay for a Palestinian suicide bomber to blow himself up and kill a bunch of Israelis, especially civilians. It is okay, however, for the Israeli army to bomb Gaza and west bank, as well as killing Palestinians on a daily basis, especially civilians.

In Wonderland, Saddam Hussein is condemned for gassing the Kurds, But Sir Winston Churchill,
who did the exact same thing 70 years earlier, is idolized as a hero of freedom and democracy.
Boy, wonderland sure is wacky!

The only problem is, it's not all fun and games in wonderland. Tens of thousands of people are being murdered, and the rest of the world is doing nothing to stop it. Countries are being invaded, elected leaders are being overthrown by foreign powers, and the rest of the world sides with the invaders, rather than with the invaded.

How did this happen? How did we all end up down the rabbit hole, listening to the official justification for all imperialist wars, and wholeheartedly believing it?

My father recalls an incident in elementary school when he was in a fight. He was the son of low class, poor French Canadians, and a social underdog. His opponent was the notorious classroom bully. He says that all of his classmates were cheering during the fight, but not for him. They were cheering for their oppressor, for the school bully. He said that this is how the world works, especially on the diplomatic level . All of the other world leaders, and the people they rule, would rather be on the side of the bully imperialists, than to face their wrath. They sacrifice their souls to be on the side of the oppressors, rather than risking being the oppressed. And with a mentality like that , it's easy to live in wonderland. It's easy to accept the official line of Imperialism as the gospel truth, rather than questioning the glaring hypocrisy and fascism within it. It's easy to gang up on the little guy, to slaughter hundreds of thousands, all the while feeling righteous as though justice has been served.

When you sacrifice everything, especially conscience and common sense, to be a friend of Imperialism, than Wonderland is really quite beautiful. Of course, it's all a horrible lie, glazing over countless tragic atrocities. But that's okay; This is wonderland.

Cannabis Culture is Anti-Culture

I've made the choice in my life to be drug/alcohol free. I plan to be this way for the rest of my life.

Sometimes people ask me why I decided to go this way.

Do I do it for religious reasons? No. ( I seriously do try not to be self righteous about my choice. If it were a religious choice, self righteousness is implied.)

Do I do it for moral reasons? No. ( I personally find the criminalization of drugs such as Marijuana to be criminal in itself. Either way, I don't look down my nose at drug users.)

Do I do it for legal reasons? No. ( Legality has not been an issue to me in past political actions.)

The reason I choose to be free of Drugs and Alcohol is because, I know what drugs and alcohol do. I can see every one around me, especially my close circle of friends and family, falling victim to the effects of drugs and alcohol.

Sometimes Neo-Cons say that "Drugs destroy lives". I actually agree with them.
I have watched drugs and alcohol destroy the lives of my relatives and close friends.
I have watched drugs and alcohol destroy families.
I have watched drugs and alcohol destroy towns.
I have watched drugs and alcohol destroy nations of people, especially the Canadian aboriginal and black community.
I have watched drugs and alcohol destroy our civilization.

I have watched drugs and alcohol destroy.

I see drugs and alcohol for what they are: a tool of state craft. When the masses are high, they are not organizing. When the masses are high, they are not paying attention to world events.
When the masses are high, they are not trying to better themselves. Drug/alcohol addiction encourages an individual-centric obsession, as they become a slave to the drug. Drug/alcohol addiction keeps the poor from rising up out of poverty. Drug and alcohol addiction
encourages crime, which keeps the state police forces busy, and gives the capitalist class a reason to pass draconian laws that encroach on the freedoms of the average citizen.

The worst part of the overwhelming advance of drugs and alcohol on our society, is the concept of so called "Cannabis culture", which is stores, products and paraphenalia dedicated to the supposed "culture" of drug use.

As I have already stated in the title, Cannabis culture is anti-culture.

While it is a common myth that drugs expand imagination and enhance musical abilities, this has been disproven. Drugs destroy language, vocabulary, imagination and any other kind of mental activity, as drugs destroy the state of the mind. Drugs destroy any kind of physical or artistic initiative in drug users, or any kind of initiative for that manner, and consume the user with the urge to do drugs, and continue to do drugs. Drugs destroy any political action, producing only a
superficial diversion at best.

Do not get me wrong. As I have said, all of my best friends do drugs /alcohol. Like anything else, drug/alcohol use is a personal choice. Personally, it isn't my choice, for the above mentioned reasons.

I think that the main reason most of our society succumbs to drug/alcohol use goes far beyond peer pressure and social norms. It is the effects of Capitalism itself. In order to get by, day to day, in a system of government were no one has hope for a better world, Drugs/alcohol are an escape. Drugs/alcohol are a way to get away from the realities of Capitalism, if only for a few hours. This can be seen in the society itself, as the majority of Drug/alcohol abuse is seen in the poorest elements of society: The Minority communities, the Aboriginal reservations, the dying prairie towns, the working class urban communities, etc. Drugs/Alcohol use represents a need that has not been fulfilled, and can not be fulfilled under the current system, hence the masses inebriate themselves to escape from this hopeless reality.

Karl Marx said "Religion is the opiate of the masses". As one of my Comrades said, "Opiate (drugs) is the religion of the masses." That said, once the needs of the masses are met, I believe it is inevitable that their false needs will disappear in time. Under socialism, these false needs will disappear in time.

The choice is yours, Comrades...

It's not my fault I'm selfish; It's human nature.

As anyone who reads this journal can probably guess, I've been a communist for a long time. That said, I have heard the vast majority of all of the major arguments against Marxism-Leninism from pretty much everyone I know. One of the most common, and perhaps the most frustrating ,is the argument that communism "goes against human nature, because human nature is selfish".

Hmm. Human nature. I see.

This is such a widespread opinion, and yet it doesn't make sense to me. Now that I've actually stopped to think about it, there are so many ways to debunk this "argument". First of all, I could even argue that "human nature" doesn't exist, but this is not a widely accepted point of view, so I will approach the issue from a different angle ( For an excellent explanation of the non-existence of Human nature, see " Understanding Marxism" by Frank Cunningham, Progress books 1978, Chapter 2.).

Many capitalists argue that selfishness, the reason that communism doesn't work, is human nature , because many human beings have a tendency towards selfishness. On the other hand, many human beings have a tendency towards murder.

From a scientific point of view, many of the oldest human remains discovered have spear heads lodged in them, an obvious sign that human beings have been killing each other for the entire duration of our history. Even from a religious point of view, In the bible the first human to die (ever) is Able, murdered by his brother Cain ( Genesis 4:8), and this is a belief upheld in all of the Abrahamic faiths. It is reasonable to also say that Murder is human nature.

So, why does our society punish Murderers?

After all, they were just giving in to their human nature. You can't fight human nature, right?

Many other behaviors such as stealing, drug abuse and rape have been with humanity as long as we have walked this Earth, in every culture on the planet . Is it un-reasonable to say that these acts are also human nature? So once again, why does our society punish thieves, rapists and drug addicts? Can't these individuals dismiss their behavior as an act of human nature, completely outside of their control?

Almost every act that is considered a felony in every nation of the world, could be viewed as an act of human nature. This is very strange.

Back to the subject of murder, if murder is human nature, why do we punish murderers?
The reason our society punishes murder is that the overwhelming majority of our society HAS NEVER COMMITTED MURDER. Despite the strong tendency of human beings to kill each other, as long as humanity has existed, the majority of human beings have never killed anyone. Those who do kill someone in our society have broken an unspeakable taboo, despite how common the occurrence is. Very interesting, especially since the act of murder does seem to meet all of the criteria to be considered "human nature".

The overwhelming majority of our society has never committed rape or stolen anything . The majority of our society, and humanity as a whole, have somehow managed to overcome the primal instinct within themselves to steal from others and commit rape. Once again, both of these behaviors do seem to meet the criteria to be considered "human nature", being as they are both common in all cultures and have been with humanity since the beginning. And yet, both of these behaviors are a social taboo to humanity in general.

Selfishness is exactly the same. Selfishness has been with human beings from the beginning, in all cultures, and it continues to be very common in our society, so selfishness would seem to be "human nature". In many ways, selfishness is much, much more common and widespread among the general population than any other type of behavior I've mentioned so far. And yet,
even selfishness is in no way, shape or form encouraged by our society in general.
Corrupted CEOs who selfishly pillage their company, hose stockholders and initiate massive layoffs are usually charged with some sort of white collar crime. Corrupt politicians who selfishly take bribes, embezzle tax money and promote their own conflicted interests are usually impeached (Usually.), Employers can no longer selfishly exploit their employees as much as they would like, because now there are many hard-earned labour laws in place. All of the most extreme forms of selfishness are still against the law.

Even the common, minor forms of selfishness are strongly frowned upon by our society at large.
Many would dispute this view, as under our current capitalist society, greed and individual-centric attitudes are constantly promoted in all of the mainstream media sources and educational institutions. While this is true that the bourgeoisie class do shove selfish values down the throats of the masses, this is purely commercial, and largely superficial.
The true will of our society can be seen everytime that selfishness does rear it's ugly head. When I have acted selfishly to those around me on occasion, no one has ever encouraged my behavior. On the contrary, whenever I have acted in a selfish way, all those around me immediately make their strong disapproval known to me, often with angry shouting. I react the exact same way towards others when they are selfish towards me. This is how our society reacts to selfishness. Most of this angry behavior comes as a result of the overwhelming influence of selfishness on our society, in the media and education institutions. This anger is our societie's rejection of the selfishness being pushed on us by the bourgeoisie.

Even the word "selfish" itself, and all related words, reflect this social taboo. In the English language, there is no positive context for the word " Selfish", the word "greed", or any derivative words. The word "Selfish" itself is a very pejorative word. Our language is actively trying to discourage this behavior through the use of context, as are the languages of cultures all over the world.

So yes, selfishness is common, and widely saturated within our society. The tendency towards selfishness in human beings is strong. On the other hand, this does not mean that selfish behavior is un-avoidable, and un-stoppable in individuals, nor is it accepted by our society.
Like all other distasteful tendencies of human beings, selfishness can be ignored and purged
from an individual. Human beings make their own choices, and if you are selfish, then you choose to be selfish. The individual is in control of their actions, and responsible for them.

When socialism is finally instituted, the poisonous commercial influences of selfishness forced upon society will be purged once and for all, and human beings will finally prosper mutually under the new society in the making.

Today is Mayday, international day of workers struggle all over the world.
On this day all progressive peoples forces unite under the banner of humanity and march with hope for a new world, a better world.

Many great Socialist developments have happened in the world as of late. In Cuba, President Fidel Castro met with President Evo Morales (Bolivia) and President Hugo Chavez (Venezuela), and signed an agreement between the three nations based on the principals of Socialism, and opposition to United States interests. In Bolivia, President Morales has nationalized all resources in the name of the Bolivian people. In Nepal, parliamentary democracy has been restored by the combined efforts of the People of Nepal and the Maoist peoples vanguard. In the United States an estimated 20 million people, mostly of Latin American descent, protested against the fascist immigration policies proposed by the American government, virtually shutting down many areas of their country as they tried to assert their rights as human beings.

These are only some of the many struggles being waged by the people of the world in defense of their rights.

At this time, more than any other since the end of the cold war, a better world is in sight. The first stages of socialism, and eventually the society of communist man, can be glimpsed in the distance.

Of course, it isn't all progressive and positive; The United States continues to regress further into fascism. The legitimacy of the Belarusian elections is being denounced by all of the powers that be, including Canadian Prime Minister Stephan Harper ( Ironic for a man who got into power on under 40 % of the vote.). The conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and Haiti still rage, as the people struggle against their imperial occupiers, with no end in sight.

As Marx said, perhaps the stage of Capitalism is in it's final days, the last conflict between the forces of the old world and the new. In order for the human race to prosper, the forces of the new world must triumph. In the name of the human race, Socialism must triumph!

A spectre is haunting europe...

Yesterday marked the 136th anniversary of the birth of V.I, Lenin. It was also widely celebrated as Earth day. Coincidence? I think not.

It stands to reason that the bourgeois powers would present an alternative special occasion to counter the popularity of the Socialist leader. It certainly would not be the first case of such an event taking place, nor the last.

But this assault on the founder of the Soviet Union extends far beyond tactics to divert people from celebrating the anniversary of his birth. The actual assault is on Lenin himself, in the flesh.

It has been 136 years, and Lenin is still with us. His body is still housed within the mausoleum in Red square, Moscow, Russia. This is exactly what the capitalists fear, and this is why they are pushing harder then ever to bury Lenin. I have heard many arguments for burying Lenin, some of them even good arguments, all of them on the grounds of moral concern for Lenins last testament and "putting his soul to rest". Of course, The true motives for burying Lenin have nothing to do with morality, and everything to do with maintaining Capitalist dominance in the former USSR, and elsewhere.

It is not Lenin in particular that the bourgeoisie want to bury; It is Socialism itself.

But the tide is turning against the bourgeoisie, and in favor of Lenin. Lenin has become a powerful rallying point for socialism, especially as Russia and the rest of the former socialist camp continue to be violently raped by capitalism. A recent study found that two-thirds of the population of Russia think favorably of Lenin. Millions of Russians, and peoples of all nations are defending the Lenin mausoleum from the advancing claws of the international capitalist powers.

Burying Lenin will be tricky enough. Burying the Revolution will be the death of Capitalism, and the birth of a new society, the society of Communist man. It is on this 136th anniversary of the birth of V.I. Lenin that a hope for the future and the vision of the revolution can be glimpsed.

Lenins memory lives on. The revolution lives on.

Yesterday I was reading a socialist book that I received some time ago from the Communist party of Canada (Marxist-Leninist), Thinking about the Sixties by Hardial Baines. I was reading in the introduction about the Kruschevite slander of Joseph Stalin after his death.

I have been hearing this allegation from various members of the Anti-Revisionist camp for as long as I have been a communist, but I have never really given it a second thought.

Lately however, I have been having doubts.

I was reminded of when we learned about the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in Grade eight
social studies. I remember that even then, my social teachers tried very hard to beat it into my head that Kruschev was one of the greatest leaders of the USSR. Very suspicious, now that I think about it. This was in 2000/2001, long after the Soviet Union had collapsed. Why were they still promoting Kruschev so hard?

It is even more strange when I think about how they portrayed all of the other leaders. Lenin was portrayed as "Misguided", Gorbachev was portrayed as " a patriotic reformer" who did "too little, too late," and Brezhnev, Andropov and Chernenko are barely mentioned. The only Soviet leader portrayed with as much fervor as Kruschev, is Stalin, although in a completely different light. Stalin is portrayed as an Orwellian "Big brother", a merciless mass murderer, even more so than Adolph Hitler in our Social Textbooks.

Why are Canadian Social Studies textbooks parroting the exact same allegations made by Kruschev after the death of Stalin? Especially now, decades after the deaths of Stalin, Kruschev and the Soviet Union.

Maybe it's me, but anytime a NATO country agrees with the leadership of the Soviet Union on anything, that probably isn't a good sign. NATO doesn't compromise, so anytime they tolerate the leader of a country formerly dubbed a "Dictatorship", let alone praise him, that can only mean that this change in leadership is guaranteeing the interests of the United States and it's allies. I have already witnessed this pattern in Iraq,Afghanistan, Haiti and even the former USSR in my own lifetime.

Comrade Baines goes even further, speculating that Joseph Stalin did not die of natural causes, but rather was murdered in conspiracy. The Anti-Stalinist measures adopted almost immediately after his death, by both NATO and the Socialist camp certainly are suspicious.

This is all a very large revelation for me. I was a fervent Anti-Stalinist in my early development as a communist, and I have preached against the Evils of Stalin on several occasions. But now, the more I think about it, the evidence does seem to favor Stalin. At the very least, if every other argument I have read can be explained away, there is still one nagging doubt: When have I ever learned anything in Social Studies that wasn't biased and twisted? Much of the official version of history I was taught has turned out to be a pack of lies. Why would they tell the truth about Stalin, but lie about everything else as far as the USSR and the socialist camp are concerned?

Very suspicious...

I was reading an issue of an "independent" magazine called DOSE a few days ago, while I was waiting for the bus. I noticed an article in this so called "independent" Magazine about people who are "Making the world a better place". The particular story I focused on involved a young girl who learned about the holocaust against the Jewish people during the second world war. Apparently this event truly touched her, and inspired her to do her part to make sure that such a thing never happened again.

So what did she do in her own way to help prevent this fascist genocide from ever happening again? Did she join/form an anti-war group? No. Did she write critical letters to the American government, or any other government supplying military might to the war on terror? No. Did she picket against Canadian neo-Nazi organizations? No.

So what was her contribution to make the world a better place, and resisting fascism?

She wrote to Canadian troops occupying Afghanistan.

Wait a minute! What does the un-just invasion of Afghanistan have to do with the holocaust?
What do our forces stripping a sovereign nation of it's liberties have to do with millions being killed by a fascist government? What is the connection?

More importantly, why is a magazine reporting this story? Especially an "independent" Magazine.

A few days later, I was reading a copy of the Edmonton SUN . Someone wrote the following article to the editorials section:

"Could all of the anti-war protesters try protesting in Iraq or Afghanistan where the war is actually going on? Or are you all too comfortable in your homes that were won through the hard work and effort of Canadian, American and British troops?- Al Boschman"

What exactly does the unprovoked Invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan have to do with Canadians living in warm homes? In what war were these homes won, exactly? Certainly not Iraq and Afghanistan. Does this loud individual really believe that our troops are defending Canada by invading sovereign countries? Does he honestly believe that Afghanistan posed a military threat to Canada, or that Iraq posed a military threat to America?

These are the typical Braying Jack-Ass, pro war opinions I encounter all the time, especially now after the recent protests against wars of Imperialist aggression. Now I certainly understand how the mainstream population of so many nations could be duped into going to war in the first place. I also understand why our "impartial" media , including our "independent" media sources, are publishing these opinions. They are spreading these ideas, spreading these notions in a very subversive way.

As I have said before, the political right-wing are masters of the art of propaganda. Granted that with a marginallized population who has no idea what is going on the world, and usually doesn't care, it isn't very hard to propagate the official line. Still, their excuses and justifications for imperialist war are so ridiculous and easily disproven, and yet overwhelmingly accepted by the general population. In this war of aggression in Afghanistan that Canada is caught up in, now our Canadian media is publishing articles trying to provide a basis for our occupation. I found the personal anecdote of the naive little girl that draws an absurd connection between the people of Afghanistan and the Nazi party of the third Reich to be incredibly idiotic, and yet frustratingly acceptable to a population that believes in the principal of "peace keeping".

When people are un-informed and mis-informed, it provides a spawning ground in the mind for ignorant opinions, like the one expressed by the man in the Edmonton Sun.

I am reminded of a quote from George Orwells 1984:
"They could be made to accept the most flagrant violations of reality, because they never fully grasped the enormity of what was expected of them, and were not sufficiently interested in public events to notice what was happening"

Information and the truth are the keys to revolution. When the veil is finally lifted from the eyes of the sleeping masses, they will inevitably react with anger. At this time, a new society will be born. And so I publish my journal online with some regularity, hoping that these dissident thoughts of mine will fall upon receptive ears....

March 18th-20th mark the international days of action against imperialist war, specifically conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and Haiti. It is in this spirit of international solidarity and global defiance of Imperialisms agenda, that I encourage all Comrades around the world to make our voices heard.

Do not misunderstand me, Comrades. I am not generally opposing all armed conflict in a social-democratic, reformist fashion. I am a Marxist, and still a firm believer in Peoples War and revolutionary armed struggle. I make the clear distinction of opposing only Imperialist war. Imperialist war is any conflict that advances the aims of the bourgeoisie and violates the peoples of the world of their sovereignty and freedom,while a peoples war is conducted by the people in the name of national liberation, freedom and democracy.

All over the world the people struggle against fascist occupation, Imperialist aggression and all of the worst aspects of Capitalist global hegemony: The people of Iraq continue to resist the occupation forces of the United States of America in the third year since the invasion. Afghanistan and Haiti both are also rising up against the "Peace Keepers" and other occupation forces imposed on their respective countries. Palestine continues to brave fascist Israeli rule, Cuba continues to brave the fascist American embargo, and the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea asserts their right to sovereignty in the face of joint military exercises by South Korea
and the United States. Many other peoples struggles against Imperialism are erupting all over the world, and are only made more pronounced on this day of action.

Unfortunately, I think that many of the global demonstrations to mark this occasion, especially in North America, will become quite Social-Democratic and ceremonial in practice. I recognize the significance of these dates to the global struggle, but I do not quite fall in with the idea of defying Imperialism only on special occasions. A dedicated Marxist must live the Revolution, defying capitalism at every turn in any way possible.

Still, it is nice to see the peoples of the world rise up and shake up the system with the rumblings of social change.

Unions- Keeping socialism at bay for seventy years

I was reading my copy of Workers Forum, monthly magazine of the Communist party of Canada (Marxist-Leninist), and I was reading about the various developments in the Canadian labour sector. Workers Forum, like other Canadian socialist papers, reports mostly on the union/labour movement in Canada. In fact, I would say that workers Forum reports almost completely on the Canadian labour movement, with very little analysis of the Canadian/global political situations. While other publications such as Peoples Voice and FightBack are more balanced in this regard, ultimately all major socialist publications in Canada seem to come back to the labour movement.

It was then that I really started thinking of the Marxist connection with the organized labour movement. On what grounds are they our "Comrades"?

Are modern day Canadian unions really our friends?

Somehow, whenever I am working with union folk to show solidarity, I always get the feeling that I am a barely tolerated annoyance from the union workers. They rarely acknowledge me or my comrades, are continually on our case about our politics, and do not seem to share any goals with our organization.

In the fall of 2005, we even marched a parade in the "make poverty history" campaign right past a group of striking Telus workers in Edmonton, Alberta. We waved to our union "Comrades". Our union "Comrades" gaped at us as though they had no idea what was going on. Not one smile, not one wave. So much for Solidarity.

Speaking of Solidarity, if I remember my history right, there was a group in Poland calling themselves "Solidarity", comprised of trade union members from all over the country. How did these unionized Solidarity comrades get along with their socialist government? They overthrew them. In at least one country, it was the trade unions that were instrumental in crushing socialism underneath their jack boots.

So out of curiosity, why do we still think the trade unions are our friends?

The conclusion that I have come to is very simple: Modern trade unions are not only anti-socialist, they are anti-worker. The Canadian labour movement in the twenty first century is overall opposed to the needs of the people, and the building of a new society.

Yes, I said it. Unions are no friends of the people, let alone socialism. This may sound like blasphemy coming from the mouth of a Marxist, but it is true. This is a different time, Comrades. It isn't the forties or the fifties anymore, no one is being shot or arrested for striking, and unions are no longer striking for the workers rights on the job sites.
Most labour unions are archaic institutions, behind the times and devoid of any progressive
elements. They exist now, only to make profits. They share a small percentage of these profits with their members occasionally, so that they can keep raking in union dues. The whole concept of the modern trade union is social-democratic and reformist. Unions have become just another
social-democratic institution of the capitalist welfare state, existing only to make capitalism more tolerable.

I think that the time is now for the Canadian socialist groups to stop supporting the union movement in Canada, and instead present the workers with a true alternative, a true workers organization, in the form of the Communist party.

I've been trying to keep up with recent developments on so called "Sectarian" conflicts in American occupied Iraq.

Apparently the Shiite and Sunni Islamic factions in Iraq are on the brink of civil war, having been offset by the bombing of a Shiite mosque, one of the holiest of the Shia faith, in Samarra.

Since the bombing, Shiite and Sunni Muslims in Iraq have turned on one another, and violence and hostilities have erupted among the two groups.

The Iraqi "Government" have blamed "anti-democratic"forces within Iraq for the bombing , saying that these anti-democratic forces are trying to destabilize Iraq and start a civil war.

To be honest, I agree completely. The forces that committed the bombing are anti-democratic
and trying to plunge Iraq into civil war.

I call these anti-democratic forces the United States of America.

When I first heard about the mosque bombing, the perpetrators were described as being dressed in camouflauged Uniforms. I noticed that this part of the story seemed to disappear rather quickly in the international press soon afterwards.

The American government is the most logical suspect for the bombings. The bombings benefit their Iraqi regime by dividing the forces that were resisting their occupation, and by providing the Americans with a reason to stay in Iraq, even after "Democracy" has prevailed.

Of course, I can only speculate. But even so, even if America was in no way involved in the bombing and the ensuing divisions, it is irrelevant. The US is still ultimately to blame for the
sectarian conflict in Iraq. The United States forces have been trying to encourage sectarian splits in the Iraqi people since the beginning of the occupation in many ways. The new "democratic" puppet government set up by America in Iraq included the Kurds and Sunnis, but excluded the Shiites. What exactly is so democratic about excluding 50% of the population from having even a marginal say in the "democratic" government? Then there is the matter of the Iraqi police. The Iraqi police remind me very much of the Jewish police force established by the fascists in the Warsaw ghetto during the second world war. In both cases a fascist foreign occupier established a police force for their conquered population, comprised of individuals who would turn on their own people for a pat on the head from their oppressors. Is this act not an attempt to divide the populace? Does this not incite civil war?

I wonder how long these sectarian tensions will last. I seriously doubt they will endure for long.
Eventually the common enemy will emerge to the people of Iraq in the form of the "Democratic"
Iraqi puppet government and the American occupiers, and a true peoples front will be realized by by all Iraqi factions.

This Tuesday, February 21, 2006, marks the official relaunch of the Peace Region Leftist Coalition, a Canadian Marxist faction.

I am calling on all Marxist Socialists in Canada to unite under one banner. United we are strong.

Divided, we are no more than a minor irritation in the side of Capitalism.

Section 1: It is the duty of the Peace Region Leftist Coalition to resist right-wing global imperialism and massive corporate entities. Right wing ideology and various types of neo-fascism are taking hold all over the world. Now, while the coalition may not be able to deal with many of these problems, they will resist the arm of the right-wing within their own backyard, as well as offer solidarity to other leftist organizations around the world.

Section 2: It is the duty of the peace region leftist Coalition to oppose war and promote peace in the war-torn areas of the world. Whatever the causes may be, regardless of the combatant sides involved, war must be prevented at all costs. Right-wing militarism is a cancer upon this planet, and only active resistance to conflict by the people can end the increasing global militarism of the capitalists.

Section 3: It is the duty of the Peace Region Leftist coalition to play a role in bring about leftist changes in the government of capitalist nations, as well as attempt to stem the spread of right wing ideals into countries that are already leftist. Passing laws in the interest of the people, as well as small changes towards the left in a right-wing government, are small steps toward a government that properly represents the interest of the people, not the bourgeoisie overlords.

Section 4: It is the duty of the Peace Region Leftist Coalition to fight for and uphold the rights of the human being, regardless of gender, ethnicity, race or religion. The prejudiced policy of the bloated right-wing institution must be combated at all costs. There must not be a master race, or dominant gender, or prevailing religion in a nation, that controls others or harms others.

Section 5: It is the duty of the Peace Region Leftist Coalition to express dissent against any corruption, unjust decisions made by the right-wing in their own interests. True democracy must be upheld at all costs, and the will of the people must govern the nation, not the will of the ruling elite. The coalition must educate the people in the abuses of the right and organize them against the right-wing in their own interests.

Passing on the red flag

I am told by one of my Comrades in the Young Juche League
(Britain), that recently Comrade Kim Jong-il, the dear leader of the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea, turned 64 years old on February 17th.

I congratulate the people of the DPRK on another year of resisting global imperialism, but this event really did get me thinking.

Comrade Kim Jong Il is getting older. What will happen to the DPRK after he passes away?

Will it be passed down to one of his sons, as it was done with him?
I find this to be very feudal and anti-Marxist in nature.
Will there be a federal election?

More importantly, when Kim Jong Il dies, will the DPRK die with him?

Very often I find myself thinking this way. I think about aging revolutionary Fidel Castro, and the Socialist republic of Cuba.
Will the revolution live on after him?

After Chairman Mao Tse-Tung passed away,China was pounced upon by the capitalist world, and "reformers" such as Deng Xioping opened up
China to capitalism. Now,the "Communist" government of China is largely superficial, an empty shell of something that doesn't exist in China anymore. The same can be said for Vietnam and Laos.

The point is, many of the old governments still committed to Socialism are being gradually weakened with the death of the old guard, and gradually invaded by capitalism. I fear for the last of the old bastions of the socialist camp.

In most of the ex-Socialist states, the people do not have a say in accepting the new capitalist government. In the former USSR, the various communist factions, which still represent millions of people, are arrested and dealt with by Russian police. Communists from other countries who go to Russia to show solidarity with their comrades are often banned from returning. In Albania, the Communist party was declared an illegal organization for many years under the new "Democratic" government. Even now in Europe, anti-communist legislation was proposed to the Parliamentary Assembly of the council of Europe, and it passed. Although these measures have not been acted upon by their various member countries, the legislation has been passed. In most situations, the return to socialism is not
even an option to the masses.

Granted that there are some new governments committed to socialism in the twenty first century. President Hugo Chavez's popular Bolivarian revolution is making impressive progress in Venezuela, The Government of Evo Morales has taken power in Bolivia,
in Moldova the Communist party has been continually re-elected, and in Belarus the government of Aleksander Lukashanko is still practicing "Market Socialism." Other states show potential for Socialism,such as Nepal, Colombia, Peru, the Philippines and India.

Still, I worry. It is up to the peoples of the world to make socialism their own, and defend it from the forces of Capitalism.

Anyway, here's to the 64th anniversary of the birth of Comrade Kim-Jong Il. I sincerely hope that the people of the DPRK will exercise their right to self determination, and continue to pursue the path of Socialism.

The revolution lives on, comrades.

Freedom of Fascism

All over the world, controversy and violence are still raging, as followers of Islam are lashing out in protest against offensive cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed (Peace and Blessings be upon him), originally published in a Danish newspaper. By now, this information is old news. A more recent development, however, is the deliberate publishing of these offensive cartoons in an Albertan magazine called the Western Standard.

When the Western Standard published the Cartoons, they knew full well the consequences, which could already be seen all over the world. The Western Standard not only published the offensive cartoons, but blatantly announced that they were doing so in other publications.
What is truly disturbing, is to watch how Western Standard defends their actions under the guise of "Free speech". They even go so far as to call themselves the "independent voice of the new west."

Independent perhaps, but in who's interests? Certainly not the peoples.

I have to give the Right-wing credit. They are very good at coming up with noble names and reasons for their causes. During the Cold war era, the ideological struggle was not announced for what it was: Capitalism versus Communism. Instead, in the Capitalist sphere of influence, it was reported as "DEMOCRACY versus Communism". The reasons for this are quite simple. The powers that be knew that not everyone was satisfied with capitalism, but almost everyone agreed with democracy . Of course this outlook is biased and based entirely on point of view. Communists, such as myself, consider Communism to be the most advanced form of democracy. To this day, people are still confused when I tell them that I am democratic and a Communist. This confusion is a left-over way of thinking from the cold-war era. The entire thing is especially bitter, as the Capitalist powers made many,many un-democratic actions during the cold war ( Mcarthyism, the Korean war, the Vietnam war, The invasion of Grenada, backing the Contras in Nicaragua, assisting the fascist government of El Salvador, etc...)

The Anti-abortion movement cloaks themselves in the guise of being "Pro-life". Once again, not every one is against abortion, but most, if not all, human beings will admit to generally being in favor of human life. The Invasion of the sovereign nation of Iraq was announced as the "Liberation of Iraq". The Patriot act, which violates constitutional rights, and allows the government to spy on American citizens, is defended as "protecting Americans from terrorism."

The editor of the Western Standard clinging to "freedom of speech" is the latest development in the powers of the right-wing disguising their causes with noble names. Does the Western Standard realize they are using the same defense as neo-nazis and child pornographers? That may sound extreme, but it is an appropriate reference, as all of the above mentioned individuals
use and abuse freedom of speech for personal gain.

We do have freedom of speech in Canada, but with freedom of speech comes public decency.
Most people realize what is appropriate and what is not, given the audience and the circumstances. That said, violating Islamic customs, and blatantly trying to stir up a reaction in Canada ,with cartoons deemed offensive by the international Muslim community, is not "freedom of speech". This action is the latest provocation against the Islamic community at the peak of a raging, and often violent, backlash against the offensive cartoons.

The Western Standard is trying to ride the wave of international controversy to make a profit. Very soon they will realize that this provocation has dug a grave for their magazine, but at least the tombstone will read "In the name of Freedom of Speech."

It isn't my fight...Yet.

Yesterday, I was talking to a Comrade of mine on the phone. I was asking if he had signed a petition I had sent him by e-mail. The petition concerned the proposed anti- communist legislation that was presented to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which I have learned recently passed.

I asked my Comrade if he had signed this petition, but I already knew the answer.
He had not signed the petition, so I was curious to find out why. My Comrade said something or other about not knowing enough about the situation, even though there was information on the petition I sent him. I knew that this was not the true reason for his non-participation in the struggle of our European Comrades.

Then he made his true motives known to me: He said to me that I should "Concern myself with our (Party's) work." This remark shocked and disgusted me. Could this individual not see that any measures against communism, even in a country far away, would affect all communists eventually? I immediately made my disapproval known to my Comrade, criticizing him for his narrow and short-sighted way of thinking.

To me, this incident illustrates the state of the global socialist camp: There isn't one.

Solidarity is a word without meaning among communists and workers movements these days. Among members of the communist movement, even in the same country, there is discord and a lack of cooperation. Many communist parties, especially in North America, have become hermit organizations from the global communist movement. In this day and age, it is possible for communists to withdraw into their shells, and convince themselves that repressive measures against communists in other countries are not their concern. Unfortunately, most modern day communist organizations, especially in North America, will continue to think this way until it is they that are being arrested or killed by state police forces.

Any measures that affect some of us, will eventually affect ALL of us. Any place where communism is repressed and stamped out, that's one more place where communism can not flourish. Any place where anti-communist legislation is passed, it will set a precedent for other places to do the same. Any victory that capitalism wins against communism, no matter how small, will hurt all of us, whether we choose to "get involved" or not.

Unfortunately, I fear it is a lost cause. I think it is up to individuals of the Communist movement to try and connect with their fellow communists, because I know that the leadership of most modern day communist organizations are secluded individuals who have withdrawn into their shells, hiding from the rest of the socialist movement.

The principle is very simple: As long as the bourgeoisie exists, they will try and destroy communism. If you do not stand up for your Comrades in their time of need, eventually there will be no one to stand up for you when the sting of bourgeois oppression finally hits home.

Is Nepal ready to be red?

Very often when I am skimming news articles about the latest in Proletarian revolutionary struggles around the world, I come across various articles on the Maoist insurrections around the globe. I have to give the Maoists credit, as they are the only Marxist group that seems to be actively waging revolution. The most prominent Maoist insurgency is in the kingdom of Nepal, where victory seems to be imminent for the Maoist forces. Other Maoist battles are being fought in the Philippines, Peru, Turkey and India, and possibly other countries.

For some time, I've been trying to work out my position on the global Maoist insurgency in the
twenty- first century. I am still undecided as to whether or not the triumph of a government based on Mao Tse-Tung thought would be beneficial in Nepal, or any other country where maoist forces are engaged in peoples war.

Now,I'm not going to go into the usual capitalist propaganda about Maoist China, the cultural revolution, Tibet, Pol Pot's Cambodia, or any other alleged Maoist atrocities. My analysis is strictly of the current social conditions in the countries experiencing a Maoist peoples war.

It is obvious that all of the regimes that the Maoist forces are struggling against, are in desperate need of immediate removal. In the case of Nepal, the regime of King Gyanendra
is repressive and backwards. In Nepal, even those that are not communist are protesting the
rule of the king.

On the other hand, I am still undecided as to whether or not the Maoist forces in Nepal are progressive. At the very least, the Maoist revolution in Nepal seems a bit premature. According to Marxist theory, a society must progress through all the various stages of human development
before they are ready for the society of communist man. Nepal is still strangled by feudalism.
Any capitalist, or even pseudo-capitalist, forces in Nepal are minimal. By Marxist standards, Nepal is not ready for socialism. Granted that V.I. Lenin did say that the weakest links in the chain of capitalism would be the first to fall, but that doesn't necessarily mean that socialism would be able to thrive in these places.

The same goes for Peru, the Philippines, India, Turkey and others. The societies of these nations are at an almost medieval stage of development. Dialectically, these countries are still not quite ready for Socialism by Marxist standards.

It may seem arrogant to some that I would think myself qualified to comment on the maoist situation in the world today. While this journal is just to voice my personal opinions, I'm sure that these opinions are not exclusively my own. Of course it is the choice of the people of Nepal, and all other nations experiencing insurgency, as to whether or not a Maoist government is what they want, and what works for them, but it is also up to the people of these respective nations to adopt Mao Tse tung thought as their own, otherwise Maoism is doomed to failure in every country it touches.

I have always been frustrated by hypocrisy, especially in the political arena. Many Canadians have a stomach for political hypocrisy, but I unfortunately do not.

During the entire duration of the thirty-ninth Canadian federal election, the Conservative party of Canada mercilessly pelted the ruling liberal party with accusation after accusation of various acts of corruption. One of the accusations against the Liberal party was the allegations that the liberal party was "Buying votes" by allocating billions of dollars in funds to various causes on the eve of the federal election.

On the other hand, a strange development has occurred in the province of Alberta, where the
Conservative provincial premier, Ralph Klein, has sent every resident of Alberta a "Prosperity Check" of four hundred dollars per individual.

So, the allocation of funds by the Liberal party to various programs counts as "buying votes", but apparently the Conservative party sending every Albertan citizen a Cheque in the mail does not fall under the category of "Buying votes."? Ah, the bitter taste of Hypocrisy.

Strangely enough, these prosperity cheques will total about 1.4 billion dollars in provincial funds. This is even more confusing. While Premier Klein is pushing for the privitization of the Albertan
public healthcare system (He has recently received approval from caucus for privitization.) , on the grounds that it is unsustainable, at the same time he sends all citizens of Alberta a resource cheque in the mail. Apparently Alberta is prosperous enough to give it's citizens 1.4 billion dollars in cheques, but not prosperous enough to provide it's citizens with healthcare. It doesn't add up.

The hard-won social programs in Alberta are being smashed into oblivion, and all the while the people cheer, because they received 400$ in the mail. I'm not saying that the provincial government shouldn't give the wealth generated from the provincial resources back to the people. I'm saying that there is a proper way to do it. Invest in social programs, rather than superficial temporary financial boosts.

Anyways, join me now in ushering in a new era of the same old government. Same corruption, same mismanagement of funds, same destruction of social programs, and same methods of purchasing an election. Same old hypocrisy; brand new package.

Capitalists love money. Communists... Also love money.

Lately I have received a series of bulletins from the Young Communist League of Canada mailing list.

The latest issue of discussion on the YCL mailing list is the issue of charging monthly dues from their membership. There seems to be a very conscious push from the YCL leadership to try and squeeze funds out of their followers. Granted that the amount they're asking for is only a few dollars a month, but the league is still trying to make regular collection of membership dues a
mandatory condition for all members of the YCL.

One of the Comrades on this mailing list even suggested that membership who pay regular dues should be given special privileges above those of membership who refuse/forget to pay their membership dues. Being as the YCL is a political organization, I have to wonder at what those
"special privileges" could possibly be?

All of these propositions actually sound quite similar to an existing political ideology.

It's called Capitalism.

This is a very disturbing turn of events for the YCL. The executive of their group is advocating that the membership pay regular dues to the organization, and one of their members has advocated "Special privileges" for members who pay their dues. This whole thing is very
anti-Marxist in nature. The currency-centric tendencies of the YCL leadership, if left unchecked, will eventually render the young communist league an impotent, spineless organization. If the concept of "Special privileges" is adopted as an incentive, the logical outcome will be the development of a clearly defined caste system within the YCL, based
on monetary contributions. As soon as some members have privileges over others in a democratic organization, everything democratic about the organization is compromised.

In my experience, it is rare to have committed revolutionary members who are loyal to your organization and actively participate in it's decisions and actions. If you have people such as this in your organization, why would you charge them membership dues for their commitment to socialism.

The worst part about this whole incident, is that the YCL is not the only communist organization in Canada that is revolving more and more around money. Most of the major communist organizations in Canada are exhibiting the same symptoms as the YCL. The symptoms are of a political disease, commonly known as Social-Democracy. Unfortunately, this is a common disease in the global Marxist movement.

It is committed membership, not the collection of funds, that makes a revolutionary organization strong. If the measures pass within the YCL that allow them to begin charging membership to be revolutionary, they might as well start passing a collection plate around at meetings, for they have already abandoned their Marxist principals.

The Holy Church of Marx

It is ironic, but in some ways there are parallels between Marxism and the various Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam), the irony being that Marxism is a scientific ideology, not a belief/faith.

The most obvious similarity between the two is the sectarian factioning that has occurred in Marxism, as well as the previously mentioned faiths.

To analyze this factioning from a religious point of view, it would seem that Karl Marx is practically acknowledged as a "God" by all followers of Communism, and V.I. Lenin is recognized as the "Messiah" by most of the branches of Communism. However, the true dividing force in both Marxism and religion is that every splinter faction has it's own "Prophet".

To analyze this factioning from a scientific point of view, the basic principal stays the same. One faith splinters into many separate religions because of the desire for power. Under the guise of
"reforming the faith" or "returning to the true, traditional path" certain individuals branch off from the parent faith and form their own religious sect so that they can be the new leader. The same exact principal divides Marxism.

It is this sectarian way of thinking that tears the communist movement apart, and eventually leads to the demise of the movement. Say what you will about Soviet political hegemony, but there was a time when the socialist camp was mostly one unified force. Events such as the power struggle between Trotsky and Stalin, the Yugoslavian communists breaking away from the Soviet Union, and the great Sino-Soviet split, caused massive rifts in the global communist movement, and split the various nations/groups into smaller and smaller, separate spheres of influence.

On the other hand, the capitalist camp remained surprisingly unified through out the duration of the cold war. Alliances were made between old capitalist enemies against the forces of socialism. It was this unity among the capitalist camp that eventually assured their global supremacy. It was the divided state of the socialist camp that allowed the capitalists to defeat socialism one faction at a time.

Sectarian attitudes among Marxists is a poison on our entire movement. I do not accept the predictable sectarian arguments about how the rest of the communist movement refuses to cooperate with your faction, self righteous assertions that your faction is the only true practitioner of Marxism or the petty excuses about futile efforts to cooperate with others in the Marxist movement. The fact of the entire matter remains: The capitalist world is indivisible, and as long as the socialist camp lays in shambles, the society of communist man will never be realized.

Getting back to the topic of the false revolution, it is not the only"revolutionary" movement that
performs empty rituals, rather than true progressive revolution.

I have noticed that certain members of the Maoist/Feminist/Ultra-Left movements have taken to purposely misspelling words on their websites, and in their literature.

What could possibly be the point of this?

It seems that the various groups following Mao Tse Tung thought, especially in North America, are some of the worst subscribers to this foolishness. In some cases they misspell words that contain the word "Man" in them, to make them more gender non-specific. For example, woman is changed to womyn, human is changed to humyn, and so on. In some cases, they purposely misspell the name of an individual or country that they dislike. The United States of America for example, is changed to the United $tate$ of Amerikkka, or the United $nakes of Ameriklan.

This practice is not only a pointless waste of time, it is a foolish one.

As far as making words more politically correct and gender non-specific by misspelling them, this is a sad example of what the feminist movement has degenerated into. There was a time when the feminist movement was truly revolutionary, fighting for emancipation from male dominated society. Many of the major battles in the struggle for feminism have been fought and won, hence the majority of the feminist movement has focused too much of their attention on pointless gestures, such as making words in the English language gender non-specific.
Pointless gestures hinder revolutionary causes, and consume revolutionary groups with abstract battles. True gender emancipation is not accomplished through fighting abstract battles.

As for misspelling the names of persons/places that you have disdain for, this is not only meaningless and foolish, it is juvenile. Misspelling a name in a satirical way is the sort of thing a five year old child throwing a temper tantrum would do. A communist group reveals it's own ideological bankruptcy through such stupidity as this.

I am not trying to critique Mao Tse Tung thought in general, or even the global maoist movement. Many factions of the maoist movement are waging true revolutionary struggles.
This is the sort of thing occurring right now in Nepal, The Philippines, Peru, Turkey and India,
where genuine revolutionary armed struggle is being waged. Somehow ,I have the feeling that
the followers of maoism in these countries are too busy fighting real battles, to spend time coming up with clever parodies of their enemies names.

There are only two types of Revolution.

There is true social revolution, and false revolution.
While a true social revolution requires real class struggle and implementing real progressive change, a false revolution requires only hollow ceremonial gestures. Unfortunately, the false revolution is the more prevalent form of "revolution" in North America, and the western world.

The false revolution can be bought in a store. There are entire stores devoted to propagating the false revolution. There are entire lifestyles dedicated to propagating the false revolution. It is a very broad movement. Skater youth, followers of the gothic movement, followers of the punk rock movement, false "anarchists" who do not know the first thing about anarchism... These are all faces of the false revolution.

Why does this false revolution spread? What purpose does it serve? The uses of this false revolution are many. After years of violent suppression of Socialism, the bourgeoisie discovered that an alternative "revolution" is far more effective in suppressing true revolution. By having the youth of the day rebel against society by listening to controversial music and skateboarding, they are much less likely to take up any meaningful revolutionary causes. Also, the bourgeoisie have finally discovered a way to sell products to a demographic of people that typically avoid mainstream consumerism. These are the two main purposes of the false revolution.

In addition to providing a meaningless bourgeois outlet for rebellion to the youth, and providing an avenue to sell them products, the false revolution effectively destroys all seeds of
dissent and revolution within the youth. The false revolution accomplishes no meaningful change, hence it is hollow, and eventually fills its adherents with a feeling of emptiness. Due to this emptiness, the youth eventually out grow their revolution, and look back on the whole thing years later as a passing fad. This prepares the youth to be conformist adults, blindly doing as they are told by their bourgeois overlords.

How can any person think that they are defying the system, when everything they consider revolutionary is a product of the system? How can any person think that they are making a fashion statement, when their "rebellious" clothing comes from a store? To own a skateboard, to listen to punk music, to have a body piercing; all of these things are products of the system.
By subscribing to the false revolution, you are subscribing to capitalism itself.

Revolutionaries create progressive changes to the society that they live in. Followers of the false revolution are, at best, controversial. Controversial is not the same thing as revolutionary.

Do not misunderstand me. I am not saying that false revolutionary lifestyles should be completely shunned. I am only saying that in order to accomplish true social change, the path of
true social revolution must be embraced.

This is my first post. I hope it won't be my last.

This is the Raven Nest. I am RavenBlade.

I am a Marxist. I have been since I was 14.
I find that Blogs are a good way to spread information, relatively un-censored.
That is my plan for the nest.
